As the cold air creeps through my open window, I sit up in my damp, ugly, scruffy bed and let out a huge yawn. It’s Saturday and I can smell the refreshing pine trees that stare at me through my window, and Mama’s homemade tortillas, chorizo, and huevos. I move to the edge of my bed allowing my long skinny legs to droop off the side of the bed. As I stand up I can feel the hot steam and condensation on the maple colored floor boards. I stand there stretching and thinking to myself, “ Living above the boiler room in a hotel, in Juarez, Mexico, isn’t the best, but it’s home. “ As I continue my conversation with myself I pad through the small corridor into the living room. Once Mama heard me and knew I was awake she hollered, “¡ Mi’jo, estoy muy ocupado, no puedo!”
As she said that I wondered how she knew that I was going to ask for a ride to work.
“Si Mama, pero necesitamos el dinero.” I knew she wouldn’t accept that, but it was true, Mama worked as a maid at the hotel in which we lived. I worked as a mechanic a few blocks away. I am also a highschool student, and a gang member. If mi familia learned about me still having connections, my ass would be grass. Mama made it clear that I wasn’t to keep in contact with the Latino Bloods or any gang. Mi familia biológica consists of, Mama, Papa, mi hermano; Gabriel, mi hermana; Maria, y mi hermano pequeño; Josh. Seven months ago the Latino Bloods killed mi papa y mi hermano, Gabriel. After that the Latino Bloods showed up and wanted me to become a dealer, so I did.
“Mi’jo, your hermana, Maria, lives in…”
Before she could finish, I interrupted.
“I know San Diego, California! Mama, I love my life here! Me amor, Gina y Carlos, did you think about them, mi familia? I can’t move!”
I’m a tough guy but when people bring up splitting me, my son, and fiancé up, it strokes a soft spot and I can’t deal with it and I go off. I suddenly felt a tear form in my emerald green eye and slowly snake down my scarred face.
“Juan, Mi’jo, tú amor can move with you, we’ve been over that part. It’s just too dangerous for you to be here right now! It’s been a little over six months and any day now the Latino Bloods are going to come knocking on the door for you.”
If she only knew..
“Mi’jo, you have a family, do you want to leave Gina and not be a dad to Carlos? You need to get your priorities straight. Your flight leaves out on Sunday at 10 in la mañana! I got to go to work, there’s some tortillas, chorizo, huevos, y frutas.”
“Si Mama, te amo.”
“Te amo. ¿Mi’jo?”
“¿Si Mama?”
“I think you’re a great son, brother, husband, and dad, but you’re not dieciocho yet, I’m your mom and I have to do what’s right, okay Mi’jo? Wouldn’t you do the same for Carlos?”
I thought about it, ‘no I wouldn’t split up my son’s family, even if he was sixteen and a troublemaker.’
All I could say was, “I guess..”
Mama seemed to enjoy my answer since to her it seemed my rebellious side died at that moment. She walked out of our small living area, and the telephone started to ring, I answered it, “¿Hola?”
“Jaunito?” It was my sister. I knew why she was calling.
“I thought I told you, número uno- Don’t ever call me that! Número dos- Don’t ever speak to me again! I’m my own person just like Papa! Gina y Carlos son mi corazón y el alma!”
“Jaun, I don’t want your ass here! I especially don’t want that ghetto girl and son of yours here either. Your fiancé is a messed up girl! I already know in a year or two Carlos is going to be rebellious just like you. I have my own family, my husband and child, Joseph and Marshell. Joseph doesn’t know about our family history, and I don’t want you bringing that ‘history’ with you and putting my family in danger! I don’t want Marshell….” I cut into my sister’s sentence, “ Marshell? That’s a gringo name!”
I heard my sister let out a sigh. “Jaun, hermano, I don’t want to raise Marshell around the… cartel” At the end she whispered, which meant Joseph walked into the room. “It’ll be okay Marsi! Hahahaha”
My sister and I burst into a laugh, I hadn’t called her that in eight or more years. The light moment didn’t last, it got heavy right away. “Can you be good Jaunito? I don’t want to be stuck with you ass!” I grinned but my sister couldn’t see me, we were on the phone. ‘How do I tell her Mama bought a ticket already?’ was all I could think.
“Mama bought the ticket already. Sunday at 10 a.m.. My butt will be within 3 hours of you.”
“Uh, okay… Jaun, why did you have to do this?”
“Because, I’m like that. I get into trouble and make other people pay time you should know that, the cartel way.”
When I said the last three words I knew I was in deep crap.
“Uhem, did you say cartel? Have you been in contact? Did they recruit you? Are you on drugs? Are you…”
I cut into my sisters constant babbling once again.
“Marsi, I’m not going to lie. Yes, yes, yes, no, and I don’t know. I want this, I love this life. I want Carlos to have the same life, it’s wonderful!”
“Jaun, did you say wonderful?”
I sighed. I wanted to hang up and forget this ever happened. I wanted to see my baby boy and totally forget this, kiss my beautiful fiancé and forget about this! ‘sigh’ I can’t. I need to step up, I need to show my sister how strong I really am.
“Marsi, I’ll see you Sunday, don’t worry about the cartel, I’ll handle it.” I quickly hung up. I mumbled a quick cuss word under my breath and thought about, how the hell am I going to get the cartel off my back. They can contact me anywhere anytime.
Why did I join one of the biggest drug cartels in the south east? “THAT’S IT!” I thought for a second, ‘why did I yell that?’
But on the plus I did have an idea. SOUTHEAST NOT SOUTHWEST. I was going to San Diego. It was on the SOUTHWEST.
This is the first chapter... There is some truth to this... Hope yall like it I'll post more when I finish the next chapter
