There have been 2 people I've known over the years that I couldn't figure out. Both were complete asses on occasion, but would do extremely nice things. One I would fish with sometimes, I could never figure him out, he would insult me, tell me to keep away from his new rod(it was $1,200 and he used it to insult everyone, telling them how much better it was than theirs). But for example, I got a backlash one day( it's a type of REALLY REALLY awful tangle that makes every fisherman cringe) and he just picks up the rod and fixes it for me, no questions asked.

With the rod it might be becuase its so exspensive he could never afford another one
like its his pride and joy

He could be defensive (Yeah I know it's usual answer) or he could like messing around with people a lot. I read an article that explained how being mean is easy to do and so people do it a lot more often, also being nice takes a lot more effort.

Everyone i think has got one of those types of friends out there, a person who is basically a dick, in your face and basically insulting but as he showed for you, they can be nice people if they want. It's just who they are really, even my best friend still treats me the same way that's just hpw some friendships go.
If you want you could always try some light insulting back, just jokingly and it should work
