Here's something I'd like to start doing annually on the forums I go to. The idea is to have a blood drive every year. During this blood drive we would like to endorse for members of our community, to take a little bit of their time out and donate blood atleast once. You can't take it with you, so why not try and do some good? So please, give blood and help save lives! There are several benefits to donating your blood:
-You're helping save lives.
-Your blood will be screened for diseases, including STDs.
-You get a free physical health examination.
-Your iron levels will be lowered.
-Reduce your risk for cancer.
-Reduce your risk for heart attack.
-Donating replenishes your blood supply, with new, healthy blood.
You have to be atleast atleast 17 (16 with parental permission) years of age or older and weigh atleast 110 pounds in order to give blood in the United States. Unfortunately, this may exclude some of our 13-15 year old members, as well as some of our slimmer members. Homosexual individuals are also not allowed to give blood. Individuals over the age of 75, must have written permission from a physician in order to donate blood. Individuals who take any of these medications will also be ineligible to donate: Accutune, Proscar, Avodart, Soriatane, Insulin, Tegison, Propecia.
You can give blood at local blood donor events that your city may be having, your local American Red Cross center, or other blood donation centers. If you don't know where any blood donation centers are, you can always try your local hospital. Our community's blood drive is brought to you by Post To Save Lives, a not-for-profit organization that utilizes the internet to help our world and the people in it.

A few questions / FYIs:
1) 'Your iron levels will be lowered.' This is a good thing is it?
2) 'Reduce your risk of cancer.' How will this be achieved through donating blood?
3) 'Reduce your risk of heart attack.' Again, how will this be achieved through giving blood?
4) 'Donating replenishes your blood supply with new, healthy blood.' Your body does this anyway on a very regular basis. If it didn't, you would die. Old, denatured blood doesn't tend to work.
I commend what you are trying to do though, blood donation is incredibly important and not enough people do it at the moment. I forget the exact figure in the UK but only about 4% of the population donates blood.

You can give blood if you're a homosexual, just not if you've had anal sex with a man.

You do realize that more than likely half of the people on this website, including myself, are legally incapable of donating blood?
Even if I was, I would never do it. Why? Because I prefer MY blood being inside MY body.
... And moving on.
-You're helping save lives. - So? Theres other ways to save lives.
-Your blood will be screened for diseases, including STDs. - This should be done on a regular basis anyway.
-You get a free physical health examination. - Depending on your insurance, you get it free anyway.
-Your iron levels will be lowered. - Thats not very encouraging, as it makes your body decrease in temperature and causes dissyness.
-Reduce your risk for cancer. - This is bull shit. It does no such thing.
-Reduce your risk for heart attack. - Again, bull shit. Does no such thing.
-Donating replenishes your blood supply, with new, healthy blood. - Your body does that naturally, and even if it didn't, how the fuck does it replenish blood? your giving it up, not taking it.
Over all shitty post, no offense.

I have to agree. I am a trained Phlebotomist (the person who draws the blood) and there is no definitive way to prevent cancer other than live a healthy life style. And the only way that it could reduce the risk of a heart attack is because there will be less blood in your body but it does reduce the risk of a possible myocardial infarction but only slightly.

I'm not quite sure its half and it's still a good idea, since it'll encourage people when they're old enough.

Why? Why wouldn't you help someone if you could? What if you needed the blood transfusion? You'd want others to donate, right?
-You're helping save lives. - So? Theres other ways to save lives.
And giving blood doesn't prevent you from doing those other things, and it's one of the easier ways to save lives as well.
-Your blood will be screened for diseases, including STDs. - This should be done on a regular basis anyway.
And this is a great, free way to do it.
-You get a free physical health examination. - Depending on your insurance, you get it free anyway.
And if you don't have that insurance?
-Your iron levels will be lowered. - Thats not very encouraging, as it makes your body decrease in temperature and causes dissyness.
Unless you're at risk of iron toxicity, yes, deceasing your iron levels doesn't count as a pro.
-Reduce your risk for cancer. - This is bull shit. It does no such thing.
I thought so too, but apparently we're wrong http://www.lef.org/news/LefDailyNews.htm?NewsID=7080&Section=Aging
-Reduce your risk for heart attack. - Again, bull shit. Does no such thing.
Actually, it does. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1997/09/970901072035.htm
-Donating replenishes your blood supply, with new, healthy blood. - Your body does that naturally, and even if it didn't, how the fuck does it replenish blood? your giving it up, not taking it.
It does encourage the process, though the impact is negligible. Your body replaces the blood after it's been drawn, at a faster rate than it would otherwise.
Over all shitty post, no offense.
A) I have to disagree
B) How is he not supposed to take offense at that?

I always wanted to give blood, but I have low blood pressure already and a heart problem so I doubt they'd let me. Plus i'm on medication so can't.

Very BAD idea.
List of Reasons why below:
1. Since gays can't give blood, why lie? I mean I'm doing it out of the kindness of my heart anyways if they don't want it that's cool.
2. The Majority of our member base falls under at least one of these categories, under 16, gay, and the male weight requirement isn't that bad, but a lot of girls don't weigh 150lbs, and finally there are a lot of people that are afraid of needles.
3. How do you plan on collecting our blood, do you have someone certified to come suck it out of us or do we have to mail it to you?
/End Terrible Topic?

Gays /can/ indeed give blood without lying.
Men who have had sex with other men (Which is a vast majority of gays, yes) cannot give blood.
There is a diference.
You can be homosexual, and have had no sexual contact with another man.
Thus, some homosexuals can give blood.
Being homosexual doesn't automatically disqualify you for giving blood.

I'm only quoting the points I disagree with being benifits.
-Your blood will be screened for diseases, including STDs.
-Your iron levels will be lowered.
-Donating replenishes your blood supply, with new, healthy blood.
1. d o you get the results? I don't think so, correct me if im wrong.
2. That's a bad thing... it's called anemia.
3. Which your body does natrually
Now, that being said, if you're healthy enough to donate without problem (I.E if you're anemic, don't) i don't see why you shouldn't. MOst people it doesn't harm, and generally there isn't enough.
I plan on donating next year. I'm 16, and while i could, there's no way my parents will do the paperwork to let me.
Assuming i'm healthy enough to, anyway.
2. The Majority of our member base falls under at least one of these categories, under 16, gay, and the male weight requirement isn't that bad, but a lot of girls don't weigh 150lbs, and finally there are a lot of people that are afraid of needles.
That's why the weight is 110?...

Usually having the attraction to men means you've had/wanted to have sex with one. A lot of homos have had sex. I mean, have you seen P101?

That's what this was for:
Men who have had sex with other men (Which is a vast majority of gays, yes) cannot give blood.
Edit: The point of my post was that being homosexual doesn't automatically mean you cannot give blood, it's only those individuals who have had sexual contact with another male that can't give.

This is correct.
Women who have had sexual contact with other women can give blood.
It's only men who have had sexual contact with men who can't give. (Besides the people with obvious pre-existing conditions)
