HURR THE BEATLES ARE OVERRATED
Not to be a Beatles fanboy, because I'm not, but the Beatles are certainly not overrated. You'd be hard-pressed to find a band that's had as great an influence on modern music as they did. Sure, some Beatles fans are overzealous, but the overall general opinion on the Beatles — that they were a record-breaking band that helped redefine what rock music is — is completely accurate. Saying you may not like any of their songs is no premise for saying a band is "overrated". The Beatles have stood the test of time, their influence is judged by the masses, not just one person who doesn't particularly like them. Besides, judgement on a band also comes from how revolutionary their actions were, not just if their music "sounded good". The Beatles are partially responsible for such staples of rock music like the concept album, different instrumentation, complex time signatures and alternative recording techniques. They were one of the bands that expanded the genre, popularizing psychedelic rock and art (or album) rock, something that was mastered in the 70s by progressive bands like Pink Floyd. Also, don't criticize the Beatles if you can't even fucking spell the band's name, goddamn. It's B-e-A-t-l-e-s, if you can't get that right I don't see why I should even consider your opinion.
Also, please, take a look at the list and weep. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_artists_who_have_covered_The_Beatles) As well as this. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles'_influence_on_popular_culture) Oh look, I have more. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles#Musical_style_and_evolution)
A band being overrated is not about whether you like them or not. This is not about "oh, I don't like any Beatles songs, therefore they're overrated!" It's about their influence on music as a whole. Were they progressive and experimental or did they just do it for the money? That's why The Beatles, The Doors and Pink Floyd are not overrated and Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers and every other sellout of today's music are. "Oh, everyone talks about Bach, but I don't like any of his music! He must be overrated!"
Metallica is slightly overrated, but their early stuff definitely helped define the thrash metal genre. Modern mainstream artists are definitely the most overrated.

We should make a new genre of music: "Cashcore". All the bands and artists who make their music for the money (and nothing but the money) fit into this genre.

Metallica I would say are the most overrated band in the history of rock - yea time to get Jack Black on your ass!
Everything they have done in my personal opinion Megadeth have done better, hell their entire first album was almost wrote by Dave Mustaine (the initial lead guitarist for Metallica but kicked him out for drug problems, whores and other related 80's rocking shindigs.)
Dave Mustaine has also been voted on many ocassions to be the greatest guitarist of all time but still they are below the spotlight of Metallica whom if put in comparison of musicianship agains Megadeth just fall into mainstream as the only real member of the "big four" of thrash the average man knows about.

That's not the point. Refer back to my previous definition of "overrated":
A band being overrated is not about whether you like them or not. This is not about "oh, I don't like any Beatles songs, therefore they're overrated!" It's about their influence on music as a whole. Were they progressive and experimental or did they just do it for the money? "Oh, everyone talks about Bach, but I don't like any of his music! He must be overrated!"
This isn't about your opinion. I couldn't give less of a fuck if you like the Beatles or not; it's the sheer ignorance of your statements that aggravate me. It's almost universally agreed that the Beatles are one of the most influential and important bands not only in the history of rock music, but all of music itself. Did you look at the articles I posted? I'll throw these beautiful facts in as well:
During their studio years, The Beatles produced what critics consider some of their finest material including the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), widely regarded as a masterpiece. Four decades after their break-up, The Beatles' music continues to be popular. The Beatles have had more number one albums on the UK charts, and held down the top spot longer, than any other musical act. According to RIAA certifications, they have sold more albums in the United States than any other artist. In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of the all-time top-selling Hot 100 artists to celebrate the US singles chart's fiftieth anniversary, with The Beatles at number one. They have been honoured with 7 Grammy Awards, and they have received 15 Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. The Beatles were collectively included in Time magazine's compilation of the 20th century's 100 most influential people.
The Beatles' influence on popular culture was—and remains—immense. Former Rolling Stone associate editor Robert Greenfield said, "People are still looking at Picasso ... at artists who broke through the constraints of their time period to come up with something that was unique and original. In the form that they worked in, in the form of popular music, no one will ever be more revolutionary, more creative and more distinctive than The Beatles were." From the 1920s, the United States had dominated popular entertainment culture throughout much of the world, via Hollywood movies, jazz, the music of Broadway and Tin Pan Alley and, later, the rock and roll that first emerged in Memphis, Tennessee. Drawing on their rock and roll roots, The Beatles not only triggered the British Invasion of the US, but themselves became a globally influential phenomenon.
The Beatles' musical innovations, as well as their commercial success, inspired musicians worldwide. A large number of artists have acknowledged The Beatles as an influence or have had chart successes with covers of Beatles' songs. On radio, the arrival of The Beatles marked the beginning of a new era; program directors like Rick Sklar of New York's WABC went as far as forbidding DJs from playing any "pre-Beatles" music. The Beatles redefined the album as something more than just a few hits padded out with "filler". They were primary innovators of the music video. The Shea Stadium date with which they opened their 1965 North American tour attracted what was then the largest audience in concert history and is seen as a "landmark event in the growth of the rock crowd." Emulation of their clothing and especially their hairstyles, which became a mark of rebellion, had a global impact on fashion.
More broadly, The Beatles changed the way people listened to popular music and experienced its role in their lives. From what began as the Beatlemania fad, the group grew to be perceived by their young fans across the industrialized world as the representatives, even the embodiment, of ideals associated with cultural transformation. As icons of the 1960s counterculture, they became a catalyst for bohemianism and activism in various social and political arenas, fueling such movements as women's liberation, gay Liberation and environmentalism.
So please, take your brainwashed fallacies somewhere else. The Beatles continue to be a massive cultural force, 50 years after they first started. They've influenced great artists (http://rateyourmusic.com/list/hatiguna/artists_influenced_by_the_beatles_in_some_way_or_the_other) like Oasis, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, Green Day, Deep Purple, Soundgarden and Queen.

I find them overrated because everyone's like, "herp de derp, the Beatles are awesome", when they've only heard like two songs from them. A band becomes overrated when people who've only heard like two songs from the band, and they say they like them(the band overall).

Not really. Many artists have cited that genres like jazz, blues, R&B, and even soul have been their influence. What do you think groups like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin listened to when they were just starting? Really, jazz and blues are probably the most influential genre to rock as it stands. Without jazz, there wouldn't be rock if you ask me.
PS Kurt Cobain, was a dumb fuck, he makes one good song in a long line of mediocre songs then shoots himself
Your opinion, I'm not going to go against it. However, my point still stands that The Beatles had an influence even on a genre as heavy as grunge. Not many bands are that universal.
As Justin has said, the status of a band/artist being "overrated" is not decided upon your own opinion. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Green Day, AC/DC...they all have fans that only like one or two songs (three at most). That's disgusting in itself.
Pink Floyd is overrated. They're good, yes, but people like them because of their popularity. But they're not overrated like Metallica, Nirvana, GNR, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC, etc.
I find that Pink Floyd is an overrated band in some cases, but they were great musicians. It's a popularity thing. As long as you're popular, people love you or hate you.

The Beatles are extremely overrated...it's not just about how much they "revolutionized" music. "Overrated-ness" is simpler than that...lets put it in terms of a ratio:
the public's opinion of the band ÷ your opinion of the band(which is obviously subjective).
If the answer is greater than 1...then the band is overrated.
And yes Pink Floyd is overrated too. Deal with it.
Does that mean they're bad?...of course not.
Metallica and Nirvana. They both suck, but yet everybody thinks they're good. I don't get it.
Yes, Nirvana is overrated but they're still a great band imo.
And not everyone thinks they're good....plus there's plenty of people that like grunge and alternative but don't like Nirvana because of their popularity, Kurt Cobain's popularity and all of the fanboys/girls.(which is a stupid reason not to like a band btw, but it happens all too often)

It seems somewhat valid if you think about it though. I've come into contact with many fanboys/girls of many bands and was somewhat hesitant to listen to the actual band. Being a fan is ok, maybe on occasion be a really huge fan, but being obsessed with an artist is just simply a turn off.

And yes Pink Floyd is overrated too. Deal with it.
Does that mean they're bad?...of course not.
I think the problem with this thread is that everyone has a different definition of the word "overrated". You can't just use the dictionary definition because it's too vague.
Personally, I believe that the definition of "overrated" is what I put in bold and quoted many times throughout this thread. By that standard, The Beatles and Floyd are not overrated. Some, like yourself, may disagree, and I can respect that. I can't respect anyone who bases their entire argument for the over-ration of a band on whether or not their songs are "good". "Good" may be the most subjective word in the English language, stop throwing it around like your definition of "good music" is right and mine is wrong. This isn't 100% about whether or not you like the band.
I can accept your mathematical equation for overrated-ness, even though I don't agree with it, however, I can't accept the people here who call the Beatles overrated because they don't like "Hey Jude". If "Yesterday" and "Hey Jude" are the only two Beatles songs you can name, get your head out of your ass and stop listening to 1, that's not even the best or most experimental of the Beatles catalog.

In my opinion(and yes this is just my opinion, im no expert on rock), I think a lot of you guys would be surprised to find out that a lot of the "revolutionary" and "progressive" classic rock bands weren't incredibly original and progressive, some of them didnt really create a brand new sound but just incorporated the styles of previous artists and managed to gain mainstream appeal because of it. Look at some of the "blues-rock" bands of the 70s (like Zepplin), there's also Nirvana of course and dont even get me started on 80s metal(especailly that "hair"/glam metal shit).
My point is that bands can easily become overrated with hindsight because people forget about the true pioneers. I wouldnt be surprised if many of the classic artists that we highly praise now, were seen as overrated and unoriginal by some back we they were active. I mean, who knows, maybe bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Green Day will be seen as great innovators of rock later on.
Just some food for thought.
It seems somewhat valid if you think about it though. I've come into contact with many fanboys/girls of many bands and was somewhat hesitant to listen to the actual band. Being a fan is ok, maybe on occasion be a really huge fan, but being obsessed with an artist is just simply a turn off.
Yeah don't get me wrong, we're all guilty of of judging a band because of it's fanbase. But a lot of the time it's unfair to the artists to do so. For example: Just because someone knows a girl that thinks Cobain is a god because he died young and was cute, doesn't mean that Nirvana is bad...it probably means they're overrated but it doesn't make a band automatically bad.

Well everything is a matter of taste, but there are some bands that even if you don't like them, they make good music, but some... are really overrated, their music is poor and just sucks.
My overrated bands are:
-The Disney artists, all of them
-Any other TV star that becomes an artist just to get money.
-Bieber
- A lot of DJ's.
- Hip hop and rap artists.
There are A LOT of overrated bands and artists... Fortunately we have good bands to strike back :D

Allot of you seem to not know what "overrated" even means.
He must be overrated!"[/B]
Metallica is slightly overrated, but their early stuff definitely helped define the thrash metal genre. Modern mainstream artists are definitely the most overrated.
That's funny because The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Doors ARE extremely overrated. BUT you people are missing the cunt sucking cannibal point. Not everything overrated is bad.
