I am going to visit an ear nose and throat doctor tomorrow because for two years I have been battling mono/throat problems. What can I expect from the check-up? Shots, blood drawing, throat cultures etc?

I don't believe they do any blood drawling an such. At least not when I had to go. They'll probably just look at things for now with their little flash light things.

I don't know what the usual protocol is where you are, but usually if they want to give you shots where I am, they have to tell you beforehand or make another appointment for you, so you shouldn't have to have any shots.

They could take a swap from your throat if they think it's necessary, pretty painless unless you have a bad gag-reflex.

As for taking blood, it depends if whatever you have is relevant to that? If it's something that you know is transferred in your blood stream, then they might take blood.

Thanks a lot guys. I've just never been to a specialist... Basically he is checking to see if I need my tonsils out or not. So I don't know what all that entails.

He'll probably want to look inside your mouth and at your throat, maybe feel your neck for glandular problems etc.
I doubt you'll have blood taken and/or shots for that, but a throat swab may be possible, perhaps to test for bacteria that could be causing infections?

You still have nothing to worry about really, it's all routine when it comes to tonsils because many many people have them removed :P

which comes to my next question...has anyone had that done? and how terrible is recovery? I'm 19 and I have not heard good things.

I haven't personally had it done, but I know people who have.
Sadly, no one has told tales of joy and a pain-free recovery, so I'd prepare yourself if I were you.

Well when i went to one in April he checked my throat, nose and ears for anything that could potentially be a problem or the cause of what was up. Felt my glands and asked me questions based on what was wrong. Really it'll depend on what you're there for. I went to have my tonsils and sinuses checked out after several bouts of Tonsillitis and Laryngitis in the space of a few months. But yeah it depends where the specific problems are.
