View Full Version : Your School Life as an LGBT person

How LGBT-friendly is your school/college/university environment?

Mine high school was quite homophobic that in my opinion coming out would be social suicide. The exception was girls. There were open lesbians and they were generally accepted.

The college I once attended (I will be kicked out because of my grades.) was named one of the top 100 most gay-friendly colleges by Advocate Magazine; however, I still felt too insecure in my self to come out.

Well I'm not entirely certain. There's the regular school population, which I stay away from because they're stupid and undriven. Then there's the performing arts kids. Now I have a lot of guys that are okay with me and such but I think they would try to avoid me if they knew I was gay. For the girls, I think they would be fine with it, but maybe a little standoffish.

Still, I don't think it's social suicide, I just don't want it to be about my sexuality, so I'm not coming out until graduation.

My school is somewhat LGBT friendly, i mean seeing as it's an all girl school, i think that they expect it and so don't actually care too much. Pupils maybe, i mean i do know some that are completely homophobic, and so that would be the downside, but most people as soon as they come are accepted and most don't even care so long as you don't try anything with them.

I guess I hate people who flaunt their sexuality...my school is typical, they hate fags lik eme, but only those who are flamers. I'm not a flamer, so yeah. I guess I don't really care what they think. I hate most of them, so I'd be fine if they hated me too.

I'm open about my gender/sexuality but also don't make a point to overly flaunt it.
School could be better. Most of the teachers don't care. Student body could be a lot better. *shrug* It's not the best envorment, but i'm not going to get killed or anything.
People like to harass though. Just friday, i was walking home and someone screamed "tranny faggot" out their window

There are only two openly lesibians in our school and people do talk about them, make fun of them and stuff like that. Not really a safe place to come out But i dont think they are bullied or sth though. Im bi but out to only two of my best friends.

Not homophobic necessarily, but more of anti-homosexual. Though, no one else knows I'm gay, so it's not horrible... yet.

So, people who dont sing, dance or act are stupid and undriven?

No. Most people who don't seem like that to me and I can't relate to them so I tend to stay away from them.

P.S. performing arts include orchestra and band.

Some girls in my year are just so imature that they still think it's a disgrace to be gay or bi. It's also a christian school so some are going to be really against it. But some girls really don't mind! And that's great. Since most of my friends are bi or lesbians, I am also very accepting.

Social suicide, youd get teased, bullyed to death.

Since I really came to terms with it I've sorta had a leg and an arm out of the closet- not really specifying that I'm straight, but not admitting to being bi either (I couldn't admit it when living with my parents, they'd flip)- but I think, well I'd roughly guess that there are the mainstream idiots who like to arse around and waste their lives- they'd just probably go mad over it ("Here, you're that f**ing homo kid, right? Aye fiddle away wie wi some other lads and get out o ma school"- tosspots. They give you a hard time for existing). The clever people will probably be understanding but wary (I could imagine they'd say "Yeah I'm ok with the fact that he's bi, it's just... I dunno" when I'm not there). And the inbetween people may be intrigued or disgusted.

There's some people who dislike homosexuals (which is pretty much me because no one else is out) but I'm mostly friends with the people who don't hate me.

I was always a bit concerned how other kids in my school would react if I came out as being gay. The whole uncertainty is really frightening. But after I started coming out to my friends, I didn't exactly advertise that I was gay, but if someone asked me, I would honestly tell them that I was. Eventually, through word of mouth, people found out, and other than a couple people saying that they're really proud of me for having the courage to come out, nobody's really said anything. They might mention it here or there, but they don't treat me any differently than they did before I came out.

What the fuck does undriven mean? Just because someone isn't doing well at school or isn't inspired to complete their school work doesn't mean they are undriven, or bad people. For one, they may be driven to do something else. Also, take into the fucking account that some people may be facing problems at home and are feeling like shit. Calling them undriven, fuck.

Apparently there are a whopping two people that are disturbed by my comment.

Who gives a fuck? PM me if you gotta bitch about it, I'm talking about my school. I'm not stereotyping all schools/students.

Also, what happened to staying on topic?

That's because most people here have ignored your statement, as most people do in most threads (ignore other statements made before posting), and we actually stopped and took a second and read something stupid and hypocritical. We give a fuck, obviously. Yes, you are stereotyping quite a lot of students who I'm pretty sure you've never had a one on one talk with.

Fuck staying on topic. If you say something stupid, I get to combat it. And don't give me that "right to opinion" bullshit. That means I also have a right to my opinion, and I also have the right to defend or attack other opinions, as long as I have reason and thought behind my attack.

My college is very liberal, so my life as an openly gay guy has been, well, relatively passive. Girls talk to me about guys, guys talk to me about girls (and guys), and I've found that very little has changed since I first made the decision to come out at the start of the academic year. Granted, there are still a handful of people who I'm sure have no idea that I am gay, and while I do not think they are homophobic, there has never been an opportunity where I have needed to out myself to them.

Thus far, I have only encountered one homophobic guy, who makes his disdain for gays well-known. Ironically, I am good friends with this guy, and that's only due to the fact he's not yet found out I was gay. Oh, I await the day for that conversation....

Well the school i go to is a private catholic school (My mother's choice, not mine!!) As you may imagine it is not very lgbt friendly. The people and my friends do not care but the teachers arent too happy

my school thinks its LGBT friendly but thats just the teachers if i were to come out to everyone i would literely be killed by the other students because they act like being gay is a bad thing but i still came out to 3 of my friends 2 gurlz and 1 guy (im not sure but i think he might be gay) but the hard thing is that the guy always brings it up suttly in class but very loud but my biggest fear isnt the students (you can get most of the people in my school off topic by waving your finger around and they would just forget every thing and chase it) my biggest fear is the teachers because well awkward conversation after class and the fact that they can tell my parents and thats an even bigger fear of mine

All my friends know I'm bi and they don't really give a shit. A good handful of my friends are either lesbian, gay, or bi(we all met in GSA) But I've never been put down by it. I've had someone tell me I'm just going through a phase but w.e. what they think doesn't affect my life. (:

School started showing anti-homophobia videos in SE- are people are reacting seriously!!! It's weird; normally immature. Some people are coming out, people are talking about who is out and who's not and how they'd react (I think it would definitely be easier to come out if people had guessed I was bi).

Well I had some problems at first last year when I came out but only with a couple of specific people and I sorted that out. So now, the only comment I've had all year so far that got to me at all was from a teacher, and I'm not even sure they meant it the way it seemed (but I'm pretty sure they did).

No, there are more. I don't want to make this more of a pissing contest than it already is, but you pretty much say that only the arts students are driven. i think that you will find that many science students are also driven. Who do you think makes the gadgets that make your life so much easier? Who is building the infrastructure of modern life? Who develops the drugs to fix you up when your sick? It's not your arts students friends I can assure you, no matter how fucking driven they might be. Oh, and science students are no more homophobic or less accepting than any other group. Peace.
