Two 14-year-olds have become Britain’s youngest parents.
April Webster became pregnant by her boyfriend, Nathan Fishbourne, when she was 13.
She gave birth to the couple’s son, Jamie, four weeks ago.
The pair are now negotiating over the baby’s custody arrangements.
Jamie currently lives with April and her parents in Caerphilly, South Wales, but Nathan has said he would like to care for the child at weekends.
The couple started seeing each other when they were aged 13 and in the same year at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly.
They started having unprotected sex shortly after their relationship began in September last year, but April said she did not tell her parents because she was “too embarrassed”.
She discovered she was pregnant a day before her 14th birthday and gave birth to Jamie by pre-arranged caesarean section on November 15.
The young mother told The Sun: “Jamie wasn’t planned but I’m going to be a great mum for him. He’s perfect and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants.”
Nathan said: “I’m just so happy being a dad. When I see Jamie I do things for him like any dad. I help change him and stuff.”
He added: “I’d love to see him at weekends and April can have him five days during the week.”
Nathan’s mother, Julie, said: “I was angry at first but now I’ve bought a cot, a baby seat, a stairgate – everything for a little baby”.
Jamie was born with a malformed oesophagus which initially hindered his feeding, but he was declared healthy after an operation and 11 days in hospital.
He is now being bottle fed by April, with the help of her 17-year-old sister, Robyn, who shares her bedroom.
April said that the arrangements for Jamie’s care still had not been finalised, adding that Nathan’s desire to look after the baby overnight at his family home had “caused some arguments”.
Her mother, Maria, said: “It was a big shock at first, but we let April make the decision on whether to go through with it.
“Now he has arrived we’re glad she did. He’s my first grandson and so beautiful.”
Britain's youngest mother, Tressa Middleton, became pregnant at 11 and gave birth aged 12 in Edinburgh in 2006.
The youngest father on record is Sean Stewart, of Bedford, who became a father at the age of 12 in 1998.
The UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.
