Do you guys think that this is actually a mental illness? To me it sounds like another excuse to put people on meds. Im asking because I have a lot of the "symptoms" but I know the system tries to control me, and I am not letting them. The school counselor thinks I have it and wants to recommend me to a therapist. Personally I think "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" is a load of bullshit. So I want your opinions on this, please.

I believe this is another case of turning what is essentially bad behaviour into a mental disorder that doesn't exist...no offence meant.
To defy authority is human nature, without it we wouldn't be in the world today, but to defy for the sake of defiance is just purile to me however should not be labelled as a mental disorder.

My four-year-old cousin has been diagnosed with this disorder. My aunt told me that when he gets excited such as when his older sister comes home from school or when he goes to a family member's house he has trouble controlling himself so he acts up severely. When he does not get excited he behaves much better and when he does misbehave it is not severe, and is the type of misbehavior one would expect.

I think it can be a real disorder. My aunt spanks him but it does not seem to be enough because he keeps on doing the same thing. She said that he is going to a special school and she is optimistic about his behavior.

I think it is real, but like all disorders that have symptoms that are normal behavior, it is extremely over diagnosed.

I think that there is a difference between a personality trait and a mental disorder. If the symptoms of this disorder severly affect there life, who am i to say it's not a disorder? If it's just a person being themselves then diagnosing it as a disorder is ridiculous. None of us are perfect.
