What is rep exactly?
Okay, I have a red rep that appeared in my user CP, but along with it came this nasty comment. Is that allowed?

Yes, its allowed.
Every member has rep power, mine is high, lol, its 124 atm. That means if I appprove of one your posts you gain 124 points, whereas if I disappove of one of your posts you lose (half of my rep power) 62 points.
If someone -reps you and from the comment you think its unfair you can appeal (by pm) to an admin.

How would I go about doing that? Because I'm pretty sure it's unfair to call me a 'dirty slut'.

Yeah you should get that appealed. Pm an admin (someone with a red name) And explain to them that you have a rep with that comment and that you feel it was unfair.

Why have rep if you can appeal it? Obviously, she should report that aspersion, but negating negative rep that you received defeats the purpose.

Not every appeal of neg rep will be granted. Sometimes people do neg rep for unfair reasons or maybe for no reason, just to be annoying. The admins will look at the circumstances and decide whether to grant the appeal or not, it's not just done by default because you have appealed.

But why have it if you can appeal it? It makes it pointless. If you get neg rep, suck it up. It's not the end of the world.

So what you are saying is if someone neg reps someone for a one year old post in p101 with that answers someones question, and it was quite obviously a member with lots of rep neg reping, that people shouldnt appeal that? It happened to me, I appealed, and got it over turned. A clear example of unfair neg rep.
I'm not saying every neg rep should be over turned, but when it is obviously just an attack on a member, or given to a post that does NOT deserve it, why should you cop it? It makes no sense for someone to cop neg rep that is undeserved, and i think the OP is right in wanting to get rid of a neg rep that called her a slut. That is out and out abuse, and you could get banned for it.

I'm talking about in general. I said that something like this is different. But people complain about getting negative reputation for a post they made, and then they come bitch to here that they got neg rep on something and they want it to go away.

To make this clear there are cases where we will remove negative reputation. After an administrator concludes that it needs to be removed and investigates. The member abusing the reputation system will receive a warning and/or infraction and depending on multiple offender a ban. If it isn't deemed inappropriate, you should look back into the future and laugh. It's not such a big deal as everyone has an opinion, let them have theirs.

It's when a someone see's a post of yours that they find to be exceptional and they give you reputation for it. Giving reputation: the button looks like this (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/images/styles/fblue/buttons/reputation.gif) and all depending on how much rep they have, your reputation goes either up or down given either positive or negative.

Generally by getting +rep. Your rep power goes up by 1 for every 50 rep points you receive from other members. It also goes up (I think) by 1 for every 6 months on site and for every 1000 posts. So if I repped you you would gain 124 points and so, depending how many points you were currently on (shown in your user cp) your rep power would go up by either 2 or 3.
