Take it slowly. First find out if you really want to start a relationship with him. If you do then you need to find out if he's interested. Flirt with him and hang out with him. If you both are willing, a relationship could start.

It's good to see that you're aware things can go wrong - friendships are delicate, and exploring potential relationship stuff can really rock the boat. I'm assuming he's not interested in you beyond being a friend from what little info you've given us, but if you really want to give it a shot, just start flirting with him and see how he responds. If he's playful and indulges in it, then you know you've peaked his interest. If he doesn't respond to it or reacts uncomfortably then you know to step on the brakes. hope this helps :D
