View Full Version : When quoting images...

So, how about when people come to quote posts that have images in it, that we should try and get people to remove the images from the quote? This would help with people who have slow, little or useless internet, same with people on phones etc.
eg:
***An image of some hot guy (Lawrence) in the photo thread**
Oh god im so hot.
So when someone quotes someone with images, they just put something like -image- or something, if someone needs to see the post they can click the little arrow on the quote.
eg:
-image-
Oh god im so hot
Wow what a hottie

I like this idea. And I already practice this.
100 copies of the same picture just gets..... annoying.

Its a reasonable suggestion, but there's not really any way of making it happen. I cant see the mods wanting to edit all the images out from other people's quotes and people just wont do it themselves.

Just try and encourage them to do it, such as nagging :P the mods are good at that! :P

No it wouldn't. Once the image has been downloaded once, you don't need to download it again - it has no effect on downloading the overall web page, but rather would only help the nuisance of having to scroll down lots.

so why is it then while i watch a page load, it loads all the skin and everything, then it loads the images, i see one image loaded fully, scroll down a bit, then i see the same image load again, and even when i look at the Activity menu on safari it shows the image as being downloaded twice, same with firefox and chrome?

On normal webpages that's true.
On vB, I'm fairly certain it uses something called image.php. It's a script that loads images when necessary. For every image, image.php is called to load the image required. Since the browser doesn't know what image is what (Until the page is fully loaded), the same image actually does get re-downloaded.
Not using image.php opens security holes, which is why it's used, even if load times suffer.

Really? As an example, look here: http://trollin.info/chickens.html
The same image is displayed many times and they should all load at the same time.
@Xbox: these all load at the same time for me, BBCode should just convert to the html version

Yeah, just ran a debug on the post page. It only loads the image once.
Perhaps I was thinking of something else.
Too much stuff in your head leads to you mixing things up. :p

I already practice this way of quoting. I got annoyed by it too, so I just take out images. But there isn't anything you can really do. Can't force this, though. Unless there is someway to make it where when you quote someone the image isn't there, like when you quote someone who quoted someone. Y'all don't know how annoying it is to see a quote in a quote in a quote in a quote in a quote.

It's definitely possible, e.g. http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=77173 -> though that isn't for this version of vBulletin.
