My dad just recently made the statement that, "99.9 percent of the world is involved in some sort of religion."

Obviously bullshit, yes? I think so.

Do you believe that you can ever say that 99.9 percent of the world is *x*, or does *x*?

http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html according to this, 84% are religious.

How can someone who doesn't practice religion, care for it, or even achknowledge it's existence be classed as religious?

I'd say he's right. I mean, you fall into that number. You're involved by detracting it.

As to your other question, I'd say yes. Though, of course, most of them are tautological statements. ie 99.9% percent of the world (when taking world with the implied definition above of the being the living human population of earth) is alive.

Technically, yes. 99.9% of the world, for example, sucks.

Everyone believes SOMETHING. Atheism requires faith in the idea that God doesn't exist. People who don't "practice a religion" are, in a way, religious, as it takes faith and a singular philosophy to believe that "religion" doesn't matter. I sort of agree with your dad if this is what he meant.

Actually I don't believe in anything, I'm completely open minded and literally have no real views on the matter at all

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

Religion and believing in a philosophy are two different things. Atheism is anti-religion. It does not involve superhuman deities nor does it have a moral code, therefore it can not be considered a religion. It takes belief to be a communist, that doesn't mean communism is a religion.

Because somehow you need faith to have no faith?

I guess so, but I don't think he just meant involved. I worded it poorly. I meant to say they are affiliated with one.

The definition of "religion" doesn't include supernatural deities. A religion is a perception of the universe. Everyone has that.

I'm not trying to argue with you guys...You didn't have to give me -68 reputation points on my first post on virtualteen...what a way to start haha

This is true. Religions dont inherently imply belief in dieties

A religion is a perception of the universe. Everyone has that.
This is false, religion is an organized set of beliefs and/or practices. I think what you're defining is closer to a philosophy...which everyone does have.

Wow that sucks but unforntunately it happens a lot on VT.
The immature anti-religious rebellious attitudes of a lot of atheists on VT just scream "i'm a recent convert". http://cdn2.knowyourmeme.com/system/profile/icon/14135/small/TrollFace.png?1268417157

Yeah, I'm sorry about that, and I never gave you neg rep. Fundamentalist atheists are just as bad as fundamentalist Christians; equally annoying.
