Well theres the obvious ones such as pressures to be thin from magazines and stick thin celebrities, but i've also heard that it can be due to lack of control in someone's life. Like they turn to loosing weight as something that they can control. other people see themselves as not good enough and try to make themselves better through this or to punish themselves by starving.

What Kathy said, and also that I've seen a few cases other than me when I was kid where they would starve themselves to attempt to either look unattractive or prevent puberty from coming on, though that's usually seen in younger sexual abuse/rape victims

Insecurities or bullying as well. Girls (and guys) that are bullied due to weight experience an self-esteem drop of epic proportions. That could bring about an eating disorder.
Or perhaps a need to 'fit in'? I guess that could follow beneath bullying though.
A lot of ballet dancers are bulimic/annorexic due to the strictness in the weight limits, the pressure to be thin is so heavy now. It's amazing that more people don't have eating disorders or just eating issues in general.
