Is that a good idea? Can marriages be handled in the private market as private contracts? A user on another forum I posted that the government should not recognize any type of relationship gay or straight or polygamous. He said that it is not necessary for the government to recognize relationships. Plus he said that it is unfair that single people have to pay taxes that married couples don't have to.
I think that making it private is not necessary and can complicate things. But then it can be a good thing. It could be easier to end divorces. Such as a couple could decide that if one of them cheats that automatically voids the marriage.
So is privatizing marriage a good idea?

Yes, it is an extremely good idea. It's especially consistent for one that holds libertarian beliefs.

I actually like this idea, but there are bound to be complications.

I meant can marriage be a contract such as a contract to work for a certain place or a cell phone contract, etc.

Currently they do receive unwarranted and discriminatory benefits. Supposed to is another issue entirely.

Instead of the government providing unwarranted and discriminatory benefits, a couple would draft a series of contracts that dictate their marriage which would likely include power of attorney, last will, prenuptial agreement, and other warranted details of marriage.

Marriage doesn't provide any explicit benefits for children that I'm aware of other than possibly custody...

It helps address custody, guardianship, power of attorney, and I believe a few other thing, though I'm not sure.
