View Full Version : Why atheists should be aloud to be high level politicians in all states

It has come to my attention that atheists aren't aloud to be governors or senators etc. in some states. Let me blatantly say this is the most preposterous thing I've ever heard. After everything they tell the kids, about how we should all have equal rights and all people deserve the same rights, people are going home and supporting a law stating that atheists don't have the same rights. I mean sure, I understand a lot of the voting base are religious fundamentalists, but somone seriously needs to-- Pardon my language-- grow some balls get up there and tell the people this is wrong despite the consequences. Another thing that disturbs me is that something like 1 in 5 people are atheists meaning a lot of people in office are atheists who lied to get where they are now. Further more I think this supports cowardice among our nation's leaders. Another thing is that usually the more outspoken atheists are usually the ones with the courage and intellect to help run a country. Especially one this messed up.
Tell me what you think about this. :D

It's already illegal, it's not an issue. (http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Constitution_of_the_United_States_of_America#Article_VI)

You're allowed to run for political positions as an athiest. It's just that you're probably not gonna get elected.
Most non-christians are just gonna lie about it...personally i dont think that our own president is a true christian (which is actually a good thing imo).

Atheists are probably not high-ranking politicians because they aren't very popular. It probably has nothing to do with any sort of law, its just that people blindly vote for the guy that sides with them on the religious spectrum. This is a Christian founded nation (USA) to begin with so it's reasonably popular among the people.

I don't think that religion makes it a good thing or a bad thing. So what if he's a pagan tree worshiper, if he's going to make the right decisions for out nation, then I'm going to vote for him.

You have to swear on a bible but I think that optional now. But If my grandpa wasn't a Christian, he probably wouldn't have won his position. (representative of 58th district of Michigan) everyone is Christian here. That's why he was so popular.

Its only an issue in America now. In Britain we have 2/3 main party leaders are athesists. Religion doesn't affect their ability to do their job and shouldn't be a political issue.

No, it's just a fairly large proportion of politicians are religious. One in five doesn't mean any of those five are politicians.

FUCK. You couldn't BE ANY MORE WRONG.

Not really true...in fact a lot of the founding fathers were against christianity and religion in general.

Before that, it was supposed to be a place where puritans could worship in there own way not the way king George (I think) wanted them to.

The colonies were all different in their own ways. Some were places of religious freedom. Some weren't. For example, Maryland was founded as a shelter for Catholics. You can't really say that before the US was founded it had a definite purpose, because it wasn't united. In fact, if it weren't for the threat of the British, the colonies would have never united as one because of their major differences.

This is why the government needs to stay out of religion
a. Im kind of missing your point. What exactly is the reason that the government needs to stay out of religion? I really dont see what part of the thread you're responding to.
b. The government almost never gets involved in religion. Unless religion is getting involved in the government or is interfering with the rights of the people.
c. Why not the other way around? Isnt it far more important to have religion not involved with the government? (separation of church and state)
