View Full Version : Une question about the Zune, mes amis.

All right, so I am in a huge debacle with myself whether or not to get a 16GB ZUne HD or 32GB iTouch. Since the Zune is a helluva a lot cheaper and actually has sixteen gigs, I'm leaning towards it. But that's not my question. Can the Zune take songs off of iTunes, or would I have to download the Zune Marketplace and do some fancy convertin' to put it on a ZuneHD?

The Zune and iTunes are not compatible. You'll have to convert all of your music, which will take a very long time, and can require an expensive program.

I currently have the new 32GB Touch, and it is brilliant. Screen is great, video recording (720p) is fantastic, music quality is very good, and it just looks cooler :D

Negative. The Zune software is capable of recognizing most (If not all) of the iTunes library, depending on what formats your audio files are in (Which is most likey mp3). And any songs that won't play on the Zune device, the Zune software will convert at the time of sync. (Which does NOT take long at all. About 2 seconds to convert a song)

Edit: @Jake: If you were wondering if the Zune would sync with the iTunes software client, then no, it won't. You'll need the Zune software for that. But the Zune software will pick up songs from your iTunes library, even if you've purchased the songs months down the road, the Zune software picks up on that almost instantly.

I have both mp3's and m4a's.

I dl'd Zune Marketplace just because, and none of my m4a's are there. What do?

This is what I meant. Sorry if I wasn't clear. In my mind I read it as "It won't work with the iTunes software." And I completely forgot that iTunes isn't DRM protected anymore....

I have both mp3's and m4a's.

The Zune software can handle both of those filetypes.
And a quick look at the Tech Specs (http://www.zune.net/en-us/products/zunehd/zunehd16/techspecs.htm) says the Zune Player handles those by default as well.
So there should be no need for conversion.

But both my windows media library and Zune Marketplace don't have my M4a's that I got from iTunes.

Are they protected? (Right click the file, click properties. If there's a "License" tab, it's protected, no license tab, no protection)
Protected M4a's are unsupported, as Apple won't give Microsoft the necessary codecs to play the protected files.

Goddamn Apple! I know of only one way to unM4a-afye them, but I ran out of trial uses, and it would cost me money. Any suggestions?

This may sound silly, but can a ZuneHD connect to iTunes, or would that be fruitless?

It would be fruitless. iTunes is for Apple products only.

I would recommend the Zune HD. The audio quality is just amazing, the battery life is long and the thing is sexy as fuck. Unless you're an app person, which I'm not, then get the Zune HD, it's perfect.

Which one has the better sound quality, that's the main thing that effects my choice of player. I would probably get the Ipod but I have never listened to a Zune, therefore i'm indecisive of which would be the better option.

Zune HD, by far. The bass is much deeper and everything is clearer in general.

You could download Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), import the M4a's into it, then save as an MP3.

Yeah I kinda skipped around a bit...

I know you can convert songs to AAC format in iTunes itself (right click song, "create AAC version), but I don't know if that will work on a Zune; they won't play on Windows Media Player for me, whereas the unconverted ones will. I don't know if thats helpful at all or anything.

I just downloaded the Zune Software too, and 821 songs showed up, whereas iTunes says I have 851. Maybe try reinstalling?

It says I can't since they're protected.

What does consolidating do?

If you don't have that many songs, the cheapest route I see is to burn the songs to disk, then rip them. The ripped songs should be DRM free. (ESPECIALLY if you use something other than iTunes)

DERP. I am fucking stupid. I knew the easiest way would be the obvious one.

New Question. :P Zune Pass. How does that exactly work? If I were to do the free 14 day thing, could I download all I want? :p

The Zune pass lets you download an unlimited amount of music from the Zune marketplace. The only catch, is that it's DRM protected. This is so if you stop paying, the songs won't play anymore.
So yes, during the 14 day trial, you could download all the songs you want (Or you can just stream them), but the songs wouldn't work after the 14 days.
The cool thing, is if you pay the monthly fee ($14.99/month, $29.97/3months, $149.90/year(You get 2 months free going this route)), Zune gives you 10 free song credits to use per month. The credits are only good for 1 month after their issued(So if you don't use them, you lose them), but hey, that's 10 free, DRM-free, songs with your Zune pass.

Heh.

One of the things I like most about the Zune Pass is discovering new music. A 30 second clip of the song doesn't tell the whole story. The Zune pass lets you 'try before you buy'. And if you use the SmartDJ feature of the Zune, it will pull music out of the marketplace, from bands you probably have never heard of, but usually sound damn awesome.

I doubt I'd get a Zune Pass since I won't have the money, but when I get a job in the summer, mayhap, I'll get one after my nth paycheck so I get a year, and then I'll indulge myself in so much music.

Wait a second, can you convert DRM or whatever format they are? I.e. realplayer, or would you not be able to burn the files to a disc, etc?

Gah, of course iTunes is prejudiced against DVDs and won't let me burn MP3's to it(I.e. the material is still protected and won't let me import it into Zune Marketplace. It just says "play", which is a lie since it won't play). Goddamn it. I didn't want to have to torrent the albums that I own.

When I said burn to disk, I meant burn an audio CD. Like one playable in a CD player. Heh. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

And I don't believe you'd be doing anything wrong by torrenting the albums you own already. I mean, I don't think it's illegal to do so, since you already own the rights to the songs.
