I don't feel like explaining for the 1000th time that hip hop isn't about being gansta, wearing expensive things and fucking bitches. Generalizing and stereotyping will only make you look like an idiot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BReXVYi5y_s). If you honestly want to believe that then the back button is for you.

With that out of the way...
Welcome to the hip hop thread. updating this thread with:

Classic Artists/Albums
Personal Favorite Artist/Albums
Interesting Artists/Albums
and other hip hop related topics

Comment, post music, troll, complain, ask questions etc...

You are all welcome to post music! You're also allowed to post modern mainstream songs. Kanye West, Jay-Z (not so much now) and B.O.B., would be examples of fairly decent mainstream artists.
However! If you post Lil Wayne (or any one from "young money"), Soulja Boy, 50 cent, retarded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UFIYGkROII) dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxjZM-d_ShI) fad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp8wJSndyd4) songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFav9P54JUA), bootyshaking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImK3gP2x0ig) club music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYH7_GzP4Tg) or rich drug dealer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mt2dZTR5kc) "trap" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8okvouuIt2A) songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCil-kLGkvc) in my thread. I will hunt you down, have your genitals dipped in undiluted hydrochloric acid and drag you from the back of my car faced down.

#1. Best/Most Influential Albums of All-Time

These albums redefined what it meant to be an MC (aka: "rapper"...athough i dont like that term). The lyrics completely immerse you into life in the "concrete jungle". The albums do sometimes deal with subjects like drugs, drug dealing, gang bangin, robbery, prostitution etc...but never in a positive way. Unlike the "nigga im rich and cool and got mad bitchez cuz i sell drugs" rappers of today.

Nas
Illmatic
1994

Nas is probably the most talented poets in hip hop. He completely changed the game with his debut album Illmatic and redefined what it meant to be a lyricist. Artists like him helped usher in the "Golden Age" which pretty much meant(to me at least) that you had to have great lyrical ability if you wanted any respect. Great producers collaborated on this gem because they saw so much potential in Nas. Every fucking song on this album is lyrical perfection.

The Notorious BIG
Ready to Die (ironic, i know lol)
1994

The Notorious B.I.G. is seen by many as the best rapper ever (a bit overrated imo). His debut album is just great. Big had great flow with clever and confident/cocky lyrics. He talks about his life, is troubles and his rise to the top. The production is amazing too. Definitely a classic.

Wu Tang Clan
Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers
1993

Nine of the best rappers ever including one of the best producers ever. The RZA is a mad genius, he created the whole Wu Tang sound which is just gritty ass, haunting, hard hitting, basement beats. And the members of the group match the intensity of the RZAs crazy ass beats perfectly. What's even more amazing is that almost every member in the group later went on to drop amazing classic solo albums. Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers is like a menu for the 9 flavors of dopeness that is the Wu Tang. One of my all-time favorite groups and you can definitely expect another post about them.

Tyler, The Creator is an underground rapper who focuses primarily on offending people. It's not horrorcore, but more though of raw nihilistic rapping. His beats are experimental and I could see him becoming the next big thing to rap. Prepare to be shocked.

A0nBhYy-cF8

My favorite rapper of all time who's lyrics are not only intense, but philosophical too. If you do not like rap at all, listen to this. This is the rap I like to introduce to people that hate the genre. It's honest and smart. Seriously, check this shit out.

#3. The Underground...part 1: Classic Underground Artists

These guys are some of the best underground artists of all time. They make/made a lot of music with such a wide variety of sounds, influences and genres that it doesnt matter if you dont like one song, you'll probably find something out there that you'll like. Their music, originality and work ethic will continue to make mainstream rappers look like shit for years to come.

Madlib:

Madlib is a multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist producer, DJ and MC. From Southern Cali, his music has a real laid back bass-heavy chill vibe with amazing and interesting samples. He made all of the beats for Madvilliany (an undeground classic).

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bClz-SWlwZY/SpBZ-C69pNI/AAAAAAAAACs/Qs370s55Iyk/s320/Quasimoto%2B-%2B%5B499.2025.023%5D%2B-%2B%5B2000%5D%2B-%2BThe%2BUnseen%2B(front).jpg
Quasimoto
The Unseen
2000

The Unseen is by far his most interesting work. Under his high-pitched alter-ego Quasimoto, this album was created by Madlib during a week long shroom binge.

Come On Feet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsT_WVuMk8I)
Return of the Loop Digga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH_2apOP4WM)
Discipline 99 pt. 0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlH2j6sSFqs)

He's not incredibly talented at rapping (like a lot of producers) but he gets the job done.
Madlib is constantly cranking out music... he's been coming out with a new cd every month for the last year or so, he's made beats for countless artists and has also started several jazz bands.

EDIT:
More madilb beats...

Dudley Perkins - Fallin' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiGU0Dp1RFA)
Erykah Badu - The Healer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XykIswFgLpU)
Strong Arm Steady - Questions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ib9ZB91GUE)
Slim's Return (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apN0AXjJxQE)

MF DOOM:

The infamous DOOM.

Short Story: He started his career in the early 90s with a group called KMD (which is also a good band). Some crazy shit went down after that (i cant really remember). After losing his group, his career and his brother, he came back as the masked villian MF DOOM to haunt the music industry.

EDIT: MF DOOM has a lot of side projects too... alter-egos King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. & collaborations Danger Doom and Madvillain & groups KMD and Monsta Island Czars.

The thing about DOOM is at first you're just like "WTF did he just say?". Sometimes it takes a while for his lyrics to sink in (and sometimes they never do lol). The subject matter of his lyrics are all over the place...it can range from women, to politics, to vats of urine. He's the type of guy that'll say some genius shit in one line and then make a fart joke in the next.

Accordion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpaonSDPw7Y)
All Caps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewc1hixzYPY)

Oh and did i mention he's a great producer? He produced most of the songs for his solo albums. The samples he uses are crazy...like from cartoons, old tv shows 'n shit. Special Herbs is a 9+ cd collection of his beats.

Dragon's Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa5A1Aaf4bQ)
Saffron (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUHoCvB6quo)

J Dilla:

One of the Kings of Hip Hop. He's a producer who's produced songs/full albums for a lot of different artists. He's from the motown (Detriot in case you didnt know) so you shouldnt be surprised that his beats are really soulful. He's a god at flipping a soul sample into a dope ass beat. He's been behind countless hip hop classics dating back to the 90s but one of the things i love most about him is the experimental sound he developed later on. Like in Donuts...

#4. Essential Albums

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EvR6sj-DXXk/SQ_8oZMz9CI/AAAAAAAAAVM/99TABHO_DuY/s320/lifestyles.jpeg
Big L
Lifestyles of the Poor and Dangerous
1995

Big L is a very unappreciated and short lived MC from Harlem, NY. He was kind of controversial for his lyrics including trolltasticly chauvinistic lyrics like "A girl asked for a ring and I put one around her whole eye." He's technically a "hardcore" rapper because of his violent subject matter but his cocky lyrics and sometimes witty puns are pretty entertaining.

Big L - Street Struck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwff61MTOUo)
Big L - All Black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U1UN4P9Mnw)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61OvtKlQe4L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Black Star
Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star
1998

This album is a collaboration between two of my favorite MCs of all time (and the producer Hi-Tek, is really good too). This type of socially "conscious" hip hop focuses on deep poetic lyrics, intelligent/witty punchlines and a lot of "Afrocentric" themes. A must have for any underground hip hop fan.

Black Star - Respiration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY6rkPsLiEE)
Black Star - Thieves in the Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LQiuQ1xIBM)

AJ, what is your opinion on The Cool Kids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY0Kj9tI8Qo)?
Meh.

Their lyrics and overall style arent really my cup of tea. But the music is okay I guess. If i see hard work and an effort being made for originality, I will never turn up my nose and ignore it. And I will at least give them some respect.

So yeah, decent music but not my thing.

Curren$y kind of has those mainstream rap lyrics that kind of bore me, but it goes well with the beats, which can be jazzy at times. So it's alright.

Fuck yeah, Large Pro is one of the best to do it. I'd give you a 100000x rep for that, if I could.
I also pretty much agree with you on Currensy. Meh lyrics but he normally has decent production that I find pretty good.
