View Full Version : English or RE?

If you were only going to do one of English or RE (among other subjects), which would it be and why? At the moment, I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do for my A-levels next year (this year I'm still finishing my GCSEs). I've already decided to do physics, maths & economics, although I'm trying to decide between English and RE as my fourth option. So, if you were to choose to do one of English or RE, which would it be? And most importantly, why?

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this matter.

EDIT: @Mods: Would it be possible for a poll to be added with the options "English" and "RE"? I rather stupidly forgot to add one even though I meant to.

English.
Language or Literature, though?
Also, what do you want to do after A Level? If you don't know, what are your most likely choices? University? A job? Apprenticeship?

EDIT: I'm in Year 11 too and deciding what to take for A Level (I want to take English AND RS) :P

I'm not entirely sure. Which would you reccomend (assuming I were to do English)? One thing which puts me off it is that we don't do both in it.

I'll most probably go into university and probably take a course in programming. I know I'm not taking IT, but I neither need it or think it necessary (since I personally think the IT syllabus is a joke).

I would rather pick English, I got a GCSE C in the subject compared to my R.E F. Although my R.E exam was very biased towards how great Jesus was instead of the promised over look of all major religions: Shinto, Hinduism etc. so I took personal offence to how single minded the exam board is and didn't study or pay attention as a personal protest. I enjoyed English though, Shakespeare was studied as part of the coursework Mc Beth is quite a good story. Plus English is easy to waffle in :D

English Language and English Literature are both regarded highly by Universities. I don't think Religious Studies is as much.
English Literature is seen as a more 'traditional' subject in general.
IT is indeed a joke. My year group are doing the ancient OCR IT syllabus. We're learning about 'technology' that barely even exists any more -.- it's ridiculous...
Anyway [/rant] :D
English is awesome, I love it ^^
I'm doing Language.

It seems I'm unable to. Just tried, to see if i could.

I'd do english. Slightly more room for personal opinion of the text

Why would you do RE? What do you have to gain from it? I'd say English is what you want, it has more to offer.

You'd do Religious Studies because you care about it/find it interesting and enjoyable.
That's why I want to do it.

English definitely :) Though, like Kathy is, I'm a bit biased (it's my minor) :P

Well, thankyou for all your responses. The reason I contemplated taking RE is because my mum said that it is held just as high regard as English in several universities (although I'm not sure where she got that from) and I have already gotten an A* (98%) in the first half of my RE GCSE. However, I know that this does not mean the A-level will be as easy and I've always wanted to do English anyway, so I'll probably do that instead.

Anyway, thankyou for all your feedback, and if anyone else has an opinion, I'll still welcome them.

Religious Studies is most definitely not held in as high esteem as English in my opinion. Of course, some Universities will say that you CAN do it - doesn't mean that you're in the top spot if you take it though.
e.g. if you wanted to do medicine, you don't HAVE to do Maths, but without it you could be disadvantaged.

What exactly do you need RE to do?

I honestly don't know. XD
Be an RE teacher maybe?
Or if you wanted to have a religious profession.

Are you going to do English Literature or English Language?

At the moment, I'm doing Literature AS Level, and I love it. We're studying King Lear and A Streetcar Named Desire (both of which are astounding).

I'd go for English Literature ^^

Well, I'm doing my A levels. I already do English Language + Literature, and I personally think it's good, and it's one the subjects I find easiest (which is weird since it's probably the hardest subject I do). It's a lot of reading and writing, if you're like me and you prefer that kind of thing then go for it.

A few of my friends do Philosophy & Ethics (similar-ish to RE, I suppose) and most absolutely HATE IT. If you like sitting around every weekend doing essays and reading about philosophers, then it might be alright I guess. But I do have this one friend who, oddly, enjoys it. :/

Think about what you want to do later on in life, and what you may need most of you're REALLY stuck. :)

...personally, I'd rather do RE >.<
I've always hated english. There are some aspects of it that I don't mind, but I hate the majority of it. I love RE though. But at the sixth forms I want to go to, it's not called RE, it's called philosophy and ethics.

I'm not taking either, I'm a science and maths type of person :P (I'm a freak, I'm aware of that).

But for you, it all depends on what you want to do after A levels. English probably looks better for most courses and university that RE does, but it's not all about that, you should take into consideration what you enjoy most, and what you think you'd get a better grade in etc.

Philosophy and ethics is my back up option if something goes wrong.

For most courses at uni, they don't ask for anything too specific. For examply, engineering needs maths and physics, but the other 2 can be whatever you want, and for medicine, you need 2 sciences and maths, or 3 sciences, but the 4th can be whatever you want.

It all depends on what you're best at, and what you enjoy the most.

It also depends on what grades you get in GCSE. I would say do the course you got the best grade in.

Most A Levels require at least a B grade at GCSE for you to do well anyway.
Also, there's no point in taking something you don't enjoy at A Level just because you're good at it...

You need a combination of both - skill + enthusiasm = success!

Nothing wrong with that; I'm quite similar myself.

That's a point which definitely applies to me. Although I've got an A* in half my GCSE because of the easiness of the exam (meaning I'll probably do very well overall), what you do in RE does get tedious and quickly since it's all about reiterating what stereotypes say that people of certain religions think about certain things (or at least over here). English would probably interest me more, even if I'm more of an A student (only just) on it rather than A*.

Anyway, another thankyou for your responses.
