I've never had a physical.

I know what it is. (Turn your head & cough)

Should I be getting them?

A Physical is mainly the basic check.Blood pressure, ears, eyes, nose they should check in your throat.Temp., pulse, breathing balance ,some will have blood drawn for things like diabetes, iron, white blood cell count, and cholesterol. If you are involved in High School Sports or even Rec sports most will make you have a Physical, which involves the checking of hernia ( Turn you head & Cough).

At 13 I would suggest doing so, most cost around $25 and most insurance company's will cover it. Can't hurt you and he should also be able to answer any questions you have about your body without being embarrassed about asking the parents.

Must differ between countries. I know if you play A high School sport in the US you have to have one.

I'd say within the next year or so, you should go in and have a physical. The 'turn and cough' test for a hernia. While they might do it, considering you're only 13, the doctor might skip it.

Think of a physical in the way of a tune-up for your parent's car; the mechanic checks all the car's fluid levels, and makes sure it's in good running condition. If he finds something not right, he tells the owner and from there, that's when the repairs become an option.

Essentially, that's the same with a human physical. Your physician will check your weight, height, your ears, eyes, reflexes, blood pressure, heartbeat, and yes he will check your genitals. Like I said however, I don't believe he'll make you perform a 'turn and cough' exam, but that's up to him.

I had one done when I was playing football, but I actually had a physical the other day for surgery, and since it wasn't for athletics they didn't check for a hernia, but did everything else. Most likely they only do that for athletics etc.
