So basically, this chick illegaly downloaded 24 songs, and shared them on some site called Kazaa. She's been in the courts for like 2 years, and finally came out having to pay the companies 1.5 million dollars, that's around 62k per song...read the rest at the above link XD

FUCK THE RECORD COMPANIES.
They're a bunch of dirty leeches who feed off their artists. Music piracy is impossible to defeat, it's time they started competitively pricing their music instead so they can save their asses while they can.

Its not that much FOR the songs, its because she downloaded them illegally. They've basically sued her, and going by how petty they are it wouldn't surprise me. plus
The 24 songs she is being sued for, including Gloria Estefan's "Here We Are" and Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile," according to Wired.com, were chosen as a representative sample of the more than 1700 songs RIAA claims she downloaded and circulated among Kazaa's 2 million users.

I'm a DJ in the UK and spend around a £100 a month on music?
I hate illegal downloading although that is OTT.

psht everyone downlodes songs...?! its unfair just cause they caught one person to charge her so much.

well they caught her spreading it, it does seem over the top. but it's not just the downloading part, it's the illegal download + providing to 2 million people.
They are within their rights to sue her as she is massively providing copyrighted material.

That's for stealing perfectly lame songs, for me that is. :P
I seriously hate those greedy assholes very much. I can't believe they'd sue one woman, in the vastness of pirateville whilst making a crude, if not brutal decision to ruin someone for sharing.

IT's hard to get a solid conviction on this kinda thing, cos stuff is so easily hidden.
I do think it's a bit steep (the fine) but on the other hand, less money going into the idnustry is more lifeblood seeping out. Although at present the industry is FINE, it's only the big companies that are dying.
So meh. Kinda on the fence.

I don't agree with illegally downloading movies, as songs are so cheap anyway. I do, however, think that $1.5 million is waaaaay too much to charge over 24 songs. $100 should be more than enough to cover it.

serves her right, more pirates should be prosecuted and charged like this, perhaps that would stop people from stealing other's work

And a middle class female is supposed to get all of this money how? We all have downloaded free ring tones or songs, either way it's all illegal. The record companies are a bunch of idiots anyways.

Next they're going to start looking newly manufactured CD's so not even they can be burned to a computer since that it technically illegal too!

Illegally downloading a song isn't stealing someone's work, that's called plagiarism. Two different things.

That's a bit outrageous.
If I had to pay, i'd be paying billions. I mean, I have hundreds of songs on my ipods, and my phone.

Is it in England? In the US it's legal, at least for now.

She didn't just download songs, she distributed them too. That's why she's being sued for so much.

For a lot of people, that's not intentional. Most file sharers auto disseminate the file. Unless she intentionally added the file to the program, I don't believe that should be a contributing factor.

That's the thing. She shared files, regardless the amount.

My point is that wasn't her intent. The prosecution should require intent.

I know, but what about vehicular homicide cases? It wasn't the person's intent, but they do get in trouble sometimes.

Some crimes require intent, some don't. I think this should.

Because pirates totally board other people's ships and make duplicates of their entire cargo, correct?

The pricing of music. I was not aware the the pricing is not competitive enough if at all.

Considering the fact that music piracy is about as easy to stop as terrorism and drugs — that is, it's impossible to stop — record companies should stop their pointless practice of suing random people and price their music to compete with piracy. I would happily buy a physical CD for a couple of dollars rather than pirate it. When it comes to digital downloads, songs need to be priced lower and offered in higher quality formats.

I wrote something pro music piracy a while back.
Maybe if some artists stopped making shit music i'd buy their albums. Also, Artists don't make much of albums. They make their money off of merchandise(t shirts) and touring. That's what I do.
My opinions on music piracy. (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1045587&postcount=2)
If you do not agree with my opinions, I suggest you go here (http://www.negativland.com/albini.html) for further research. If this still isn't enough, please knock some fucking sense in my head.

Someday, we'll live in a utopia where record companies no longer hold a monopoly over music artists. And we shall all dance and sing whilst enjoying the abundant music that will traverse the Earth, spreading peace and joy.
