View Full Version : How low of a heart rate is too low?

usually my resting pulse is around 70

Right now it's 60 (i've noted it below 50 though).
I've spent the past 15+ min dizzy and trying to start breathing normally again.

I'm still a little off, and debating the merits of sleeping this off.

This isn't frequent, just often enough to be annoying.

Bad?

A resting pulse of 70 is very good, 60 is good too. Once it hits 50 it would be considered fairly slow, but isn't too critical. Considering what you described, it sounds like you might be having a panic attack, but I can't really tell just from your description.
If it happens a lot, then it may be some kind of heart condition, otherwise if temporary I wouldn't worry about it.

Genrally your resting heart rate in a normal mental state is determined largely by your cardiovascular fitness level. 60 is good, I believe 72 is average. Some athletes (notably Lance armstrong) have heart rates at 31-33 bpms, however the lowest on record is 28.
I think this abnormal heart rate of yours is all psychological. Go do something that will take your mind off it, and you should return to a normal breath/heart rate.

Panic attacks shoot it the other direction, and I'm more used to that.

You can be overweight and fit at the same time. Like the guys said above, 60 is good and healthy. If you are light headed that might be blood pressure or something but not your pulse. You might just need fresh air, you might not have enough blood sugar or you might have a bug I guess.

I think the rates Will said are rather extreme, I didnt think they went that low.

The average rate for a good, fit, healthy person is 70-72. The fitter you are and more exercise you do will lower your resting heart rate, I tihnk most elite athletes are around 50-60 so I wouldnt be too concerned. If however you dont do much exercise, and you feel lightheaded, and out of breath, you might want to get that checked out. Best not to take risks when it comes to your heart I reckon.

No, you can't be. It's a contradiction.
I do have stupidly low blood preasure, but that's not being effected by my weight because i'm not quite that overweight.

My heartrate is 52 and some of my friends are sub 50. I even know a kid who's 36 bpms.
I think most of this is mental. You know how sometimes you notice yourself breathing, and then you feel like you have to breathe instead of your body just doing it for you? Well your doing that then worrying about it it seems. Sooooo relax, you'll be fine.

Again, I'm hardly fit. I'm a good 15+lb overweight.
There was a time I was in shape (competitive swimming), but I quit two years ago which means I'm in no way still having positive effects due to it.

It usually has alot to do with not eating. I have a heart condition that means my heart rate is often way too fast yet when i've not eaten properly for a few weeks even my heart rate goes down to below 60. I'm not sure of the biology behind this but it's not eating that causes this and if you continue this way it will only get worse and yes, it will become serious.

your heart rate is normal - you r young and in good shape.
the only time you should worry of the rate of your heart is when it goes to zero.

You ought to get your bp taking if you have a syphgnometer at home use that if not go see a doctor.
