Behemoth
Across the tiles
It speeds toward
The city, far below;
A 250-ton behemoth
Thick silver with glaring
Opal eyes,
Intent on finishing the job
Started over fifty miles away.
Shellacking the ground
With a timbre even the deaf
Could feel reverberate in their eardrums,
The behemoth rumbles forward.
(The trees bend in, as if attracted
Through magnetic force
To the metallic beast. )
The chug-chug of the monster’s heart,
Undermined by a screech and a feral growl
Upon the descent to the town
Where onlookers, with brown, green, and blue eyes
Stare deep into the reddening eyes
Of the great, silver behemoth,
As, with all its force, it comes to a stop,
And with it, the ground, the trees,
The world on its axis, breathes out
And unhinges the tension,
Stopping the shaking and the aching,
Pushing the sun a little bit closer
Toward the center of the sky.
