What Love Is

My heart, in your hands,
Palpitations full of fervor,
Each beat brings us closer.

The ventricles wide open,
In your hands my heart softens,
My eyes glittered with tears,
My smile in full gear,
My mind blank, my feet sink
Into the ground around you and I.

Quicksand, a lover’s trap,
A lover’s quarrel, I cannot stand,
I fall in; you remain on the perimeter,
You put out your hand, but I cannot grasp.

My heart slips out of your desperate hands,
Into the abyss, underneath the sand,
Swallowed up in a sea of ground up gold,
My stomach churns and my heart exfoliates,
Drug under a layer of empty covalence,
I disappear with my eyes left blind in permanence,
My heart just a shadow of what—what I could have been.
