"An estimated 40,000 people marched to Merrion Square Dublin, Ireland, where they were addressed by student leaders.
The union said any attempt to impose cuts on students will meet with strong opposition.
USI says thousands of students will be forced to drop-out of college if the registration fee rises again.
The latest speculation is that the charge will rise from its current level of €1,500 to €2,500. ANd a 10% cut to the student grant.
The last big student march was in 2008 when 15,000 people took to the streets."
Unfortunatly the protest turned sour when some people turned violent (not to do with the actual reason for protest). The students had a peaceful march and lobbied the government to not increase fees because students will simply not be able to pay to go to college, increasing the number people on social payments and leading to a generation gap in the educated people of Ireland.
Students of Ireland were last year GUARENTEED that fees would not be raised

Yeah. They're rising our fees from £3,000 to £9,000 and are trying to stop EMA (Helps students to buy things they need if their parents earn under a certain amount). Its fucking stupid. They can't have it both ways, they moan kids aren't going to university to get good jobs but 1. there are hardly any jobs now they've cut back and 2. They've put uni prices up to extortionate amounts that hardly anyone is going to be able to pay for.

Really? I mean seriously. You Europeans just need to shut up about the fact that your ridiculous benefits are being cut down. You want to know what I have to pay for college? $53,000. So yeah, 2,500 euros is nothing. Stop complaining.

Yeah! Don't voice your opinions, just bend over and take it. You guys need to be just as miserable and in debt as we are.

$53000 equates to roughly £30000 which is the debt we will have upon graduation, so we now have the same right to complain as you.

By the time I'm fully done with schooling, I'm looking at a minimum of $250,000 worth of debt. So yeah, you don't get to complain about it.

Yeah but our countries differ. What is normal for you is different to us and vice versa.

$53000 for a university education (which supposes you pay nothing towards your education and take it all in loans, right? people don't save in Britain?) seems reasonable to me. Very reasonable, in fact.

We have to repay it after we get out of uni and into a job, so yeah we do have to pay for it ourselves at some point.

They dont care if you have a job over here. 6 months after you finish college is when you have to start paying.

That's your own choice to receive private education, I have no sympathy with people who complain about private education.
