View Full Version : Blaming the victim survey

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about whether women deserve to be raped if the do not take the so-called proper precautions. Most people believe that when it comes to rape, the victim should never be blamed because it is not their responsibility to make sure they are not raped. I wonder if people would feel differently if a person was a victim of a non-sex crime such a as or robbery or if a person can be partially responsible for a crime happening that they did not commit..
1. A person forgets to lock their door when they leave home and then they are robbed.
2. Same as above, but the person knew that there was a serial burglar on the loose.
3. A person leaves their valuable belonging unattended and it is stolen.
4. A man leaves his wife at home forgets to lock the door and someone goes into his home and rapes his wife.
5. Same as above, but the he and his wife knew that there is a serial rapist on the loose.
6. An adult leaves a child unattended and the child is abducted/kidnapped
7. A child/teen disobeys a parent and sneaks out of the house and night or goes to a place they are forbidden to go to and they are raped/assaulted/murdered
8. A person accidentally leaves a purse, wallet, valuable belonging in a public place and it is stolen.
9. A person goes near the home of a registered sex offender, knows that a convicted sex offender lives there, and is victimized by that person.
10. A person does not take precautions when there is known serial killer/sexual predator and then is victimized.

1. A person forgets to lock their door when they leave home and then they are robbed.
Stupidioty, but shouldn't be blamed
2. Same as above, but the person knew that there was a serial burglar on the loose.
That's your own damn fault.
3. A person leaves their valuable belonging unattended and it is stolen.
Own fault.
4. A man leaves his wife at home forgets to lock the door and someone goes into his home and rapes his wife.
...Why didn't she lock it? Still not victim fault.
5. Same as above, but the he and his wife knew that there is a serial rapist on the loose.
I didn't know we lock up our wives in this day and age.
6. An adult leaves a child unattended and the child is abducted/kidnapped
Parent's fault for negligence
7. A child/teen disobeys a parent and sneaks out of the house and night or goes to a place they are forbidden to go to and they are raped/assaulted/murdered
Need more information
8. A person accidentally leaves a purse, wallet, valuable belonging in a public place and it is stolen.
This is teh same as leaving things unattended
9. A person goes near the home of a registered sex offender, knows that a convicted sex offender lives there, and is victimized by that person.
I assume that means "and they got raped"
Not victim's fault, the offender should have left people alone.
10. A person does not take precautions when there is known serial killer/sexual predator and then is victimized.
I really don't know.

Four four and five, I didn't mean it like women are supposed to be locked up in the home. I based that scenario on a question I asked on Yahoo Answers:
"If a man leaves his sick wife home to go buy her some medicine and forgets to lock the door is it his fault?
if someone goes into his home and rapes her? Explain your response."

1. A person forgets to lock their door when they leave home and then they are robbed.
Depends on the area you live in.
2. Same as above, but the person knew that there was a serial burglar on the loose.
Blame the victim.
3. A person leaves their valuable belonging unattended and it is stolen.
Again, depends on the area.
4. A man leaves his wife at home forgets to lock the door and someone goes into his home and rapes his wife.
Not the wife's fault. Or the husband's. Women aren't the same as unattended objects.
5. Same as above, but the he and his wife knew that there is a serial rapist on the loose.
Still not their fault.
6. An adult leaves a child unattended and the child is abducted/kidnapped
Adult's fault (depends on age of child too).
7. A child/teen disobeys a parent and sneaks out of the house and night or goes to a place they are forbidden to go to and they are raped/assaulted/murdered
Child? It's the parents' fault for not keeping an eye on them. Teen? It's the teen's fault for being so damn stupid.
8. A person accidentally leaves a purse, wallet, valuable belonging in a public place and it is stolen.
Person's fault.
9. A person goes near the home of a registered sex offender, knows that a convicted sex offender lives there, and is victimized by that person.
Person should've been more cautious.
10. A person does not take precautions when there is known serial killer/sexual predator and then is victimized.
Depends on the area. If you live in a small town, it's your fault.

1. A person forgets to lock their door when they leave home and then they are robbed.
They shouldn't be blamed, even if it does contribute to the house being robbed, as we all forget things. Robbers can always find another way in, like breaking windows.
2. Same as above, but the person knew that there was a serial burglar on the loose.
Well, they would be a little silly not to make sure their door is locked if they have been warned by police/news etc.
3. A person leaves their valuable belonging unattended and it is stolen.
I suppose it depends. If someone leaves there belongings on display in their car when its parked, then it would partly be their fault imo.
4. A man leaves his wife at home forgets to lock the door and someone goes into his home and rapes his wife.
You certainly can't blame someone for this (the wife or the husband). If a woman (or any person) is home alone, they should make sure everything is locked, but you can't blame them for forgetting.
5. Same as above, but the he and his wife knew that there is a serial rapist on the loose.
Again, it would be no ones fault. They should both be extra careful in keeping windows/doors locked. But, even if everything is locked, it might not make a difference to a rapist who might be determined to get in.
6. An adult leaves a child unattended and the child is abducted/kidnapped
Partly to blame. If a child is in the care of the adult, they should make sure the child is ok.
7. A child/teen disobeys a parent and sneaks out of the house and night or goes to a place they are forbidden to go to and they are raped/assaulted/murdered
You can partly blame the parents for this. If they are the responsibility of an adult, child or teen, then the parents/adults should be reponsible. If it is an older teen, they should have a little more reponsibility.
8. A person accidentally leaves a purse, wallet, valuable belonging in a public place and it is stolen.
It would be their fault. There can't be anyone else to blame.
9. A person goes near the home of a registered sex offender, knows that a convicted sex offender lives there, and is victimized by that person.
You can't blame the person. If the sex offender is on a register, then the government should be aware of this, and the government/police should be keeping the public safe. It wouldn't be the best idea to go near the place though, but the person cannot be blamed.
10. A person does not take precautions when there is known serial killer/sexual predator and then is victimized.
Same as above really. It would be a good idea to carry something like rape spray, but you certainly cannot be blamed for being raped.

But take first example, for example.
You frget to lock your door, but it doesn't give a reason for people to rob your house.
In many villages in turkey, people dont lock their doors because tey know that nobody would want to steal their stuff

to make it all short, basically I agree with all the answers here.

Crimes are never the fault of the victim in any capacity.
A case for this could be made in the case of the victim facetiously asking for it, but if the world were right that asking for it would constitute consent and the assaulter would be justified in their actions.

Just because the option of breaking into a house is there, by no means implies a necessity of the opportunity being taken.
3. A person leaves their valuable belonging unattended and it is stolen.
6. An adult leaves a child unattended and the child is abducted/kidnapped

There is some utter neglect of reason in these actions, but that does not justify the actions of the person committing the crime. The victim should be given consequence, but the criminal should be dealt with in a much harsher manner. In the case of the parent leaving a child at home, the parent should be punished harshly. The teenager is a stupid kid, and harm was caused to themselves, and not others. They should be scolded, but not punished. Someone leaving their purse at a restraunt doesn't deserve a punishment; loss of their purse is punishment enough.

forgive me for being simple but to me its as easy as
- it is illegal to have sex with children
- if someone has not given their consent then its rape
