I know this is basically a debating forum but I propose that we actually have a debate every week. Making the Opposition and Proposition from volunteers and deciding the motion from a list submitted by users of the forum or a Mod.

Each person in both teams would have the chance to make their speech, as you would in a normal debate, and after all speeches are done the other users can ask questions and the debating can begin in ernest.

A poll would then be done to see who has carried the debate.

Again, this is just a wee idea because I am part of my school's debating team and I think it would be an awesome idea to have something similar on this =]

Yeah! I like this. It'd be too much work to do it for every debate, but a weekly one with two members outlining each viewpoint before beginning the debate and then a poll to declear the winner, would be a very interesting concept on ROTW.

I think the results would be to lopsided and biased... VT agrees on too many issues.

I fail to see the point in this, given that I am always right about everything.

I don't think ROTW should be some sort of formal debate forum. VT agrees on mostly everything. Forcing people to take the opposing side would kill all enthusiasm. I think it's best to just debate informally, you know, all chill n' shit.

Wouldn't have to force someone to take Devil's Advocate. Just do a topic on which two people disagree. I, for instance, would be willing to go Con in an Animal Rights debate.

Even then part of debating is sometimes having to debate something you don't believe in or support. That is a very real prospect for me at the moment as I am part of my school's debating team and we are waiting for the first round motion to be sent to us for the national competition.

It's an interesting idea, I guess. But how would these community-generated topics be more "visible" than the regular individual topics?
