A 1600 isn't all that bad, don't be so down on yourself! You can still get into the vast majority of schools, and don't forget that you can always try again if you're unhappy with what you got this time around. Most schools don't necessarily even focus heavily on one test score, and they'd likely focus more on how you've done academically across your high school career more. Don't stress about it, you did perfectly normal (well, even above normal compared to some people) on the SATs. It's one test that doesn't define the rest of your life.

How did you do percentile-wise?

Have colleges started look at writing yet? When I was applying it was still new and colleges were saying they weren't going to use it for admissions yet.

Way back when I got a 1520 out of 1600 (800 verbal, 720 math) :D I love standardized tests.

True, your scores could be better - i think I got higher as a sophmore on everything except writing - but this SHOULDN'T keep you out of schools assuming you have a decent gpa.

people are realizing sat/act scores aren't the best indicator of knowledge of intelegence.

Most aren't. At least the schools i've looked at aren't using sat writing yet.

Oh, yeah. Mixtape, that's 1600/2400, not 1600/1600

Though, question, is this SAT or PSAT? Either way i'm not sure how you got this year's scores back.

I mean, even then, it's still not that bad. I got a 1700 on my SATs, and I still have quite a few colleges jumping down my throat for me to apply to them. Even then, SAT scores are at an all time low compared to past scores and such. One of my good friends who's absolutely brilliant when it comes to her GPA and academics only scored a 1600 the first time and a 1610 this time around.

The tests are flawed, and colleges are realizing this like you said. It balances out when you show them your GPA, and the only colleges that seem to really care are Ivy League schools and places such as Johns Hopkins University.

Just don't beat yourself up. Not everyone is an amazing test taker, and as long as you tried, that's what should matter. If you can, go for it another time, but don't focus so much on studying - perhaps take a class on SAT Prep, and just learn off of that. SATs aren't the easiest thing in the world, but they're definitely not something you can really prepare all that well for.

I'd still apply to your top colleges and everything you wanted (I'm not sure which year you're in, sorry! ): ), but perhaps look up a back-up school just in case. There are so many other admission factors that play an equivalent role in admission decisions it's not even funny. :P There are even some schools who don't even bother looking at SAT or ACT scores, so if you want you could try applying to one of those as well.

Take the SAT again, then?

Since you took it as a sophmore, you can't be expecting the scores to be as high as they should be. I didn't consider that at first - sorry

No, actually I'm a junior. I took the PSAT 3 times. freshman (my mom made me), sophomore, and this year (Juniors should take it).

I can retake the SAT and ACT and I'm probably taking the PSAT again next year

ShatteredWings

I know that.
But those scores are from last year, correct? So their your sophomore scores, and not really a good representation of how well you're going to do when it counts the most.

What's the point in the psat again? it only really counts for nmsqt and I THINK you can only get that the first time you take it in your junior year (so the one back in october was the one that counted for that)

Those aren't bad scores. (:
Imo I didn't do that well on the SAT, but I'm not letting it bother me too much. I can still get into plenty of schools with my score and like someone else said, it is constantly being debated how the SAT isn't even a good measure of your intelligence anyway, so it's not like you're considered "dumb" if you don't ace it. Some schools aren't requiring you to have SAT or ACT scores anymore, because they don't feel like it's a good indication of how good of a student you are.

A college about an hour from me was on the news, they look at the scores if you submit them, but if you don't take the tests, no big deal, you don't get rejected. They look at your GPA, followed by your reccomendations, and then your extra curriculars.

actually these scores are from the test this year; they were posted a few weeks ago a few weeks after I took the test

I tink the point of the PSAT is to prepare you for the SAT :S

Those aren't great scores, but it's by no means the end of the world. Try and figure out what gave you the most trouble and why, do some studying to improve upon those bits as best you can, and then take it again. Also consider the ACT as well; some people seem to find it easier.

Worst comes to worst, as Autumn said there are increasing numbers of schools that are test-optional, and those are a definite option as well.

I'm pretty sure that's not a lot of schools though

1. Now i'm really confused. How did you get this year's results back so quicly?
2. exactly, it is, so why take it after you've taken the SAT?

^^ Never said it was a lot, I was just making her aware that not all schools require it.

Jess, if you have schools in mind, check what the minimum scores are for acceptance.

My mom made me take the SAT. Juniors in my school district have to take the PSAT. anyways, I'll be taking the SAT again next year :S

I don't know how I got the results so quickly. It just said on the college board website after I took it that I would get it in this many days and it wasn't a lot. *shrugs*

I suck at the SAT, just saying. I have a really good GPA, and I just don't believe it's an accurate way of measuring one's intelligence.
