psychosis is a term used by psychiatrists, and it basically means an abnormal condition of the mind, or it's used to describe a kind of, loss of contact with reality. A lot of the time, when people are experiencing psychosis, it can be accompanied by hullucinations or delusions.
It varies in severity, and can be a cause of an underlying mental disorder. It can also be caused by some kind of stress, or a psychologically traumatic event could lead to a psychotic episode.
What context do they use the word psychosis? That could help you to understand what they mean by it a lot more.
Personally, I've never experienced psychosis that I'm aware of, but I have a friend that has.

Don't worry, my last psychologist threw around the term nonstop. I had no idea until I looked it up myself. She always used the phrase "flirting with psychosis" when she talked about how she was scared for me. The only thing the same psychologist surely said was that I have DID, and that I flirt with psychosis. :P

Psychosis means abnormal condition of the mind, and is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality". However, many people have unusual and unshared experiences of what they perceive to be different realities without fitting the clinical definition of psychosis. For example, many people in the general population have experienced hallucinations related to religious or paranormal experience.
