View Full Version : Straight Edge Values

Now I want to make it clear, I'm not straight edge but I do have friends who are edge.

Those who are edge do not smoke, drink, do drugs, or have sex.

Now heres a fun fact, edge became popular because of a gang, Friends Stand United (FSU).

Alot of the music I listen to has edge values, I.e. my signature as the hardcore movement in Boston is the reason its popular.

What is the straight edge opinion now that they now their way of life is violent for some.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-V2Fg3ilm0&feature=related

I think it's asinine and heinously stupid to take pride in things you don't do, seeing as it gives people an excuse to be smug, self-rightous fuckheads without actually accomplishing anything or lifting a finger. I don't sky-dive, I don't shop at American Eagle, I don't collect postage stamps... Do you see what I'm getting at?

I have to agree with Sage here.
Fair enough I drink very occasionally, but I don't feel the need to advertise the fact that I don't do drugs and stuff, unless it comes up in conversation with someone and then it's kinda relevant, not just saying "hey look at me and how 'clean' I am".

100th post :3 eeee.

I'm also going to clarify my stance on this further before someone can ask:

I don't have any problem with people who choose not to drink, get high, or fuck, what I take a problem with are people who use that as a moral high-horse.

I second this.

I think it's wonderful to not drink or do drugs if you don't like those things... but I think it's the height of pathetic inanity to make it such a big part of one's life as to label oneself with some retarded appellation like "straight edge" because of that. Like, are all these people really so uninteresting that the fact that they don't like substances is a major, noteworthy part of who they are as people? That's kind of sad. Get some real accomplishments to be proud of.

It's much like people who are super proud of being virgin, except with a stupid label.

Are you suggesting that a person's virginity isn't of value?
Or more that it's of value, but nothing to shout about?

Personally, I don't consider it to be of any value. If someone else wants to value it, that's their business and I don't really judge them for it. But, like you say, it's nothing to shout about. I would hope people have better things to be proud of.

Its a good too to get girls to say AWW.

Its one of those thigns for me I could do if i wanted to but don't because no desire.

But straightedge kids who walk around with giant X's on their shirts... yeah good for you. I have friends who don't do anything but that annoys me.

What about those who live in a place where it's difficult, even dangerous, to be straight edge? Where it really is a hard fought accomplishment?

Where is that, exactly?

Again, playing devil's advocate here.

Rough, inner city neighborhoods, where staying clean can get you killed because of ones refusal of the invitation of the wrong person.

There's a difference between abstaining from those things and being part of some stupid clique. Growing up in a rough neighbourhood doesn't make your xXx graphic t-shirt any less tacky.

Or more that it's of value, but nothing to shout about? It's when someone claims that losing it means a complete loss of dignity that gets me.

Well, where I live, it kind of is some times. Not for everyone of course, I don't just go round frowning down on everyone who has sex because, lets face it, practically everyone is going to have sex at some point. However, I just can't justify 12 year olds running around having sex or whatever... It reflects on their parents of course, but I mean I don't feel it's right :/ they're just children in my eyes...
That's more what I'd be getting at.

That's kind of a contrived situation. Besides which, anyone in that situation is not going to be walking around boasting about how straight edge they are.

They may when they get out of it. Also, I was playing devil's advocate. I personal find them annoying too. I'm sure you get someone in here who's a real supporter, you'll be able to get a better example.

Straightedge became a gang

FSU, friends stand united. They beat others for not being straightedge.

They're less against non straightedge now and more into the crowd killing at concerts.
