What's your opinion about skipping school? I'm not talking about people who NEVER, EVER go to school and are constantly skipping. I'm talking about a day of relaxation, no more than once a month.

My mom basically gives me the decision all the time to take a day off if I want. I'm 16, number 1 in my class, I can handle this whole school situation. She sees that I basically run on no sleep, and she says that if I want to take the morning off, or the whole day, or leave early, then I can. She'll write me an excuse to get out of class early, or to go in late, or miss school.
I took a few last year. Although, even when I take these 'mental health days' I'm doing work all day long. It's usually just so that I have some time to catch up and get ahead.
I haven't taken any yet this year, but I've considered it many times, and I will probably now that volleyball will be over soon.

It would be an extremely nice break once in a while if your in higher years of schooling (A-levels for example) but really, you'll never get this easy pass in the real life of work without cutting into your entitled holiday leave, so really my personal opinion would be to suck it up, missing out on sleep comes with the job in some circumstances, when the work load does get truly heavy. My teachers have although said on 1 to 1 conversations that if you where to take a day off if you really needed it to get work done and play it off as illness they will be very quick to look over it; but this only works with certain teachers. In my school I have a teacher that's so dedicated to her job she's up past midnight most nights (i only have three teachers including her in my 6th year.)

i realize you don't live in the americas or brittan, so i'm not sure how your schooling works.
but yes, someone pays for it. in the US, everyone pays into it.
you think it's juvenile to skip for physical health (i.e. throwing up or contageous)? Probably not. Mental health is the same thing really.
Skipping for the hell of it isn't what we're discussing here

I take them sometimes. My parents don't mind at all. My mom is the one who is always saying: "if you need to stay home, stay home. You'd know better than I would." I guess because of the fact that I'm a senior, I have near perfect attendance and I get good grades gets her on my side so she can see that missing a few days here and there won't hurt me too badly.
Weird thing is, she started being flexible like this in tenth grade. In and before ninth, she'd let me stay home if I really wanted to, but she'd be more annoyed about it.

I haven't taken one in a very, very long time. I wait for the weekends. At my school, it's a three days a week schedule for classes, the rest of the time I'm doing homework all day, so it ain't so bad. However, I adopted Benjamin Franklin's daily schedule, so I get up at five every morning on weekdays, and I'm getting rather sleep deprived. On Saturdays I sleep til noon. So I get my rest elsewhere, and don't really skip school ever.

I skip classes I like every now and then, even if I'm not having a bad day or behind on work. I do it to break my routine. I'd probably go mad if I did the exact same thing every day.

Never done it, but hell, i'd love to have at least a couple days a semester where i could just say "Fuck it... i need a day off" and just stay at home and relax, or get myself caught up on other things than school. Bleh... I hate school.

I used to skip a lot at the various schools that i went to. In fact i almost didnt graduate because i missed so many classes during my senior year.
I hated sitting or standing by myself so i would just walk around the school and eventually leave.

I'm too strict to myself to do that, Once i know i have something to do i have to do it. I guess its the way I've been brought up, as soon as i hit 11 i was deemed responsible by my parents, so anything i know i have to do i will do, even if i don't have to i'll do it.

I don't mind school. I have a ton of friends there and I like most of my teachers.
I wouldn't skip school unless I'm sick, or get a chance to go to something that would be a "once off" thing; like once I skipped to go to the Ryder Cup, and in like April this year I might be skipping a couple of days before spring break to go to my cousin's wedding in Ireland.

I just can't skip school around here. Down here in Texas, they are strict as fuck about skipping, and a missed day is equivalent to a week of homework hell.

I used to do this, I'd have no more than two a year.
Now that I'm in Year 11 (UK) I just can't afford to do it.
It means missing out on up to four/five pieces of homework... as well as all the class work!
Waaaayy too much hastle, wish I still could sometimes though. Mum often offers them, but I never take them anymore :/
Also, I'm in a private school. So I'd be basically paying to miss a day. We're broke as it is without wasting 9 hours worth of money just for the sake of a long nap :/

People who skip school frequently = No.
People who take a day off once or twice a month is fine. I do it occasionaly. My mum lets me

There is the problem with not being able to do that with work, and I see how it would be a better idea to suck it up. My only thing is that you can choose what you do for work (for the most part) and you can't choose anything about school... except electives I guess.
I took day after day of relaxation days when I went to upper school. That's when my mental health problems reached their peak though. It was a struggle, and it was really nice to be able to say okay, I'm going to sleep in today, and to have a parent that allowed me to do that.
It's when I had a restriction in how many days I could miss a year that I ended up going crazy from the stress and ended up in the psych ward. It was actually a nice six day school break :P
I can't stand constant school. I simply can't. Too much of it really makes my brain shut down. That's why I take online college classes instead of working on my undergraduate on campus... I get to do my school work when I want to, which has gotten to be vital to my happiness and education.

I don't know, if you skip and you're not sick that's inexcusable and in my school you can get in trouble for that.
if it's skipping because of an important event like a funeral or wedding, that's OK

I'm all about having some R&R between the breaks. Preferably between the weekends as my favorite day to miss is Wednesday because it's about as far away from Saturday or Sunday as you can possibly get. But that being said it's prudent to stay in school as often as you can so you can take the freebie days. Keep good grades and good standing with your teachers, then miss all you like :)

I belive that school load is just to heavy, so yes i agree with taking a mental health day, never done it in school, but me and my bro are in the same college and we take a mental health day every month and a half, head to town see a movie, wander around, and bitch about things except for college things their BANNED for the day

my opinion is just about the same as everyone's, taking a mental health day is reasonable. i take a mental health day about once every two months. i usually choose days that i have no tests on or i know i don't have any projects due.

Eh, actually the state's not that bad (if you stay in the cities).
But our schools are mediocre, and the board of education is terrible.

I'd never skip school, especially in the higher years, you get free periods anyway, so pretty much two hours just to hang out at the local shops with your friends, before heading back to school, once every two weeks. Barely anyone skips school here, and the people that do are the 'regular offenders' that ruin our reputation and probably come to school 1 in every 3 days, but i want a good work career so i'm not like that. Having said that, if i do feel even a bit sick in the morning, i'm quick to cash in on it, as long as i know for a fact i can catch up the work.

Not all schools do that. Mine doesn't. We have 7 (or 8 if you elect for the early morning period) classes, no study halls, no large breaks besides lunch.

Nah, i skip lunch most of the time and I don't get a lot of homework.
Also, system works differently in the USA, I can't just 'change school' unless I:
a) move
b) pay for private
neither of which I can do.

admittedly, i between the christmas holidays and june of this year, i think i went to school about 3-5 days? and it was my GCSE year, i don't reccomend it, i regret it, luckily i still got onto an amazing college course with so much support, which is good, and i still get tuesdays off to relax.
By the way, i wasnt just being lazy between xmas and june, i had severe MH issues, and was in and out of psych hospitals between those times.

Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice
From what I've tasted of desire

But if I had to perish twice,

Is also great
And would suffice
