View Full Version : Panic Attacks?

I'm really not even sure if what happens to me are panic attacks, but maybe someone can help me out. :)
Last night, I went on a haunted hayride/haunted house/haunted maze.
Of course I was screaming and stuff, but in one part I was extremely scared. My breathing got really rapid/shallow and I was wheezing, I started shaking, and to the touch my body was extremely warm, but I thought I was freezing. I was crying, so that may have affected my breathing, but I've sobbed a LOT harder than that and it was different.
One of the people asked if I was alright, and I said yes. But it sounded like it was someone else talking. It felt like I was outside my body watching what was going on.
One of the people that worked there ended up walking me through with my friends, because I was still breathing really rapidly and wheezing and crying, which was extremely nice of him.
We finally got to the end, and when the cool, fresh air hit my face I still felt extremely weird....I got my breathing to come back to a normal rate, but it still felt like I wasn't part of my body. I was talking and it sounded like I was watching a movie or something.
After sitting in my car for 20 minutes or so with my friends, I was okay, which is good.
This isn't the first time it has happened, which is kind of scary.
I really really hate large crowds of people, and this used to happen during some of my larger classes. All of the sudden the teacher would sound extremely distant, and I would ask to use the restroom, and usually on my way there the breathing would happen again.
Am I going crazy?

Anxious, yes. Crazy, no.
No haunted houses for Autumn?
That just sounds like a panic attack. Something freaked you out a little too much, maybe claustraphobic? I'm no good with haunted houses if their too 'good' or too confined
best thing is to at least try to hold on to your breathing. Hard as shit sometimes.
personally i've found counting backwards from 100 seems to help. i'm not sure why.

Try next time this happens observe your surrondings. Pick an object to give an example a lamp. Describe it in your head. The obvious details. It's black, it's shiny, the light is bright. Keep doing this. Another thing you could do if you are numb, because when I have panic attacks, i go numb you could try fixing your shirt, your hair play with something in your hands, this consentrats on what you are feeling and you need to try to rmeeber what it feels like. If your not in public dumping ice cold water on my head helps me. If your in public try going to the bathroom and running hands under cold water, or just wash your hands. I hope this helps!!

No, you're not going crazy.
It sounds to me (IANAD, at least not yet) like a panic attack, which may have brought on an episode of depersonalization/derealization. Do you get those feelings you feel like you aren't part of your body often?

Depends on what is considered often. Not everyday usually, but around 3 times a week I would say.
It's not really that big of a problem, more annoying than anything because it feels like people talking to me are extremely distant. So, if it is going on during class I can't really hear my teachers.

The only reason it is interfering is because it's annoying. It's not really causing me....health problems.

That is, IMO, often. I'd talk to a mental health professional about it.
I get the same thing on occasion (not nearly as often), it's probably not gonna cause you any problems, but it may indicate a bigger anxiety disorder under the surface.

No, but health problems and mental/social problems both effect and interfear with your life, and should all be treated apporopirately.

I've had at least 7 panic attacks in the last two years and I can tell you that this does sound very much like one. The only difference is that in my first three, I actually lost consciousness entirely. (I woke up after the first one to find the person sitting across me - it was in class - laughing :/)
Sometimes the best thing to do is to find out what your trigger is if you've had it more than once. It may be panic disorder for which there is usually a reason - for example, intense medical procedures, hearing about them and stuff, is my trigger (though I've gotten better). You'll find that while they may continue to occur you can sort of…*fight them. A cool towel on your forehead, breathing deeply, drinking fluids, raising your legs (lying down), and eating things with a lot of whole grain can be extremely helpful.

I'm pretty sure this is a panic attack. All your symptoms have happened to me, and i went to see a doctor and they told me it was just a panic attack. Your definitely not going crazy so dont worry about that. And yeah what he said ^ find out what your trigger is and you could either face it and try to over come it, or avoid it all together, either way good luck.
Oh and if you know what tiger balm is, you should buy some. When i would get panic attacks i would just rub tiger balm on my forehead and within minutes it would be gone, kind of a self learned remedy :)
