To quell the overwhelming amount of modern shit pop (including Justin Bieber) that is present on this part of VT, I am introducing a new thread about one of the most popular and mysterious artists of all time: Michael Jackson.
Yes, I know he's dead.
Anyway, I think he's good. Sure, he didn't write every one of his songs, but fuck that, he's a good singer and he pretty much invented the moonwalk. It doesn't get much more epic than that. Plus, his collaborations with Paul McCartney are also good.
Have you guys noticed that there's a correlation between people who listen to metal and people who listen to Michael Jackson? All the metal-oriented people I know also listen to him.

Sorry, but I hate Pop Dance music. I never liked Michael Jackson and never will. I know, it's so wrong of me to not like another one of the "Pioneers Of Music". Fuck that. I hate when people think you HAVE to like him and other artists like The Beatles.

Nah, I don't have a problem with that. Michael Jackson, as you said, isn't accessible to some people simply because he's dance-pop.
Nobody has to like him, especially not over the Beatles, who were much more creative than Michael ever was.

But that's the issue - people act like he invented a cure for fucking cancer. That's how good people think he is. Now, nobody is going to go back and look at Funkadelic's masterpiece album of the late 1970's, "Maggot Brain", which was easily allot more interesting then anything Michael Jackson has done.

Yeah, Michael wasn't that amazing. He just made goddamn catchy songs that weren't mass produced by everyone but himself. Nothing to orgasm over, and I'm sure there's much more "interesting" music out there, like you said.

He's pretty much the only pop/R&B I like, so I can't judge whether or not he's the best.
I've been a fan of MJ for years, long before he died. I don't mind if people start listening to him because of his death, as long as they're not like "OMG I LOVE THRILLER AND BILLIE JEAN THOSE ARE MY FAVORITE MJ SONGS LOL MJ FOEVAR".

I became a fan after he died, only because I was curious about the type of music he made. I listened to him a lot, especially 'Off The Wall' and 'Bad'. Haven't really been turning him on a lot lately, but I listen every now and then.

Im not gonna lie MJ had some talent and originality but its really hard to get into someone as overplayed as Michael Jackson. And when its comes to overrated and overplayed MJ is indeed the King.
Now, nobody is going to go back and look at Funkadelic's masterpiece album of the late 1970's, "Maggot Brain", which was easily allot more interesting then anything Michael Jackson has done.
sad but true...imo P-Funk(Parliament-Funkadelic) is far more influential than Micheal Jackson. i mean, the song maggot brain alone rapes the entire Jackson family discography, but whatever....

I'd have to disagree here. There are plenty more artists who get overplayed and Jackson is one of the many.

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, The Beatles, there are plenty but these are the worst offenders. Granted, I like Floyd and The Beatles, but I can't stand how overplayed they are. Besides, Michael Jackson didn't even start getting overplayed until he died.

First of all, I listened to Micheal Jackson for a very long time. My mother had bunches of cassettes and 45's of his. So it brings me way back when I start to listen to his music. A lot of people as seen in this thread only started to dig him once he was dead. Just like many, many other people did.
There are so many more albums to MJ than "Bad" "Thriller" as soon as he died, what album of his is #1? None other than Thriller. So it goes to show that a lot of people went to buy his "Thriller" album because it was well known. When you look at an artist like Micheal Jackson, he hasn't had the best history. Though he was huge in the 80's, he's had 2 cases of child molestation, both of them dismissed, not very many supported him or his music then. Though when he died, he made as much money as he did when he was HUGE in the 80's. Not no one really listens to him because it's "old" "Out dated" like it was a flow, then not so much since people moved on.

He just died like a year ago. He's been the King of Pop for like 30 years.
When it comes to popularity, record sales, radio time, chart positions etc...very few artists were on his level.
This nigga was huge!

We all know that. However, ever since the second molestation accusation, he wasn't even thought about. Then he dies, he gets more airplay than he ever did. And it's true, more people became fans once he kicked the bucket. The surge in sales of all things Jackson prove that.

It's because people who listen to metal do so because they've developed their own taste in music through searching around for good music
This means they may also like some non metal, if it's good so people who listen to metal often don't mind michael jackson, sometimes eminem, and even depeche mode

Pretty much like that. "Thriller" seems to be the only thing he's really recognized for, which is a shame really because he had better albums.

That's an interesting theory, however, I would say many (if not most) metalheads seem intolerant of other music genres. Maybe it's MJ's collaboration with famous rock stars (Slash, Paul McCartney, ect.) that make him more appealing. Maybe it's the simple catchiness of his songs.

I hold that Thriller is Michael Jackson's best album. Bad and Dangerous are also very good, I actually think Dangerous is more fun to listen to than Bad.

I have to disagree with you here. On listening to Thriller, I feel it is very substandard generalized early 1980s pop. Of course, there's some good songs on there, but most of it is truly just the typical 80s pop so common of one hit wonders, just too generic.
Bad, it's a mix for me. Some of it is actually pretty rock-popish. Of course, there's still that 80s pop element that kinda pulls me away from it. But still, a good album.
Dangerous is where he came through. He mixed R&B, pop, and rock together. THAT is what I look for, personally, in an artist. Mix shit up, be experimental, and don't be afraid to go there and expand your genre.

Well, I think Thriller is the soft, easy-to-access album. It's never hard to dive right in and find yourself running through all the tracks. Just good, funky 80s R&B.
Bad is very rock-pop, and at times that can be a bad thing — some of the songs just don't feel like they should be on there. If you have the Bad special edition, the two unreleased tracks "Streetwalker" and "Fly Away" seem a lot better than some of the tracks that ended up on Bad.
Dangerous is pretty epic. It's a fusion of hard rock, rap, R&B and pop, and it works great. Sure, not all of the songs are hits, but they're all very emotional and have a special sound to them. Not your basic ballads and love songs, this is where Jackson dives into his own personal issues, and it makes for an intriguing listen.

MJ attracted a lot of curiosity regarding his works just so after his death. It became a fad in my classroom and also, I had the motivation to master the moonwalk on his requiem. :D

I have to fully disagree with that, as a metalhead myself with mainly metalhead friends I'd claim the majority of real metallers, (not just nu metal like slipknot korn etc or only mainstream metal like machine head, slayer etc) metallers who listen to stuff like Carcass/Arch Enemy/Katatonia/Amon Amarth to list a few, they listen to a variety of sub-genres within metal from folk to thrash to power to doom to death etc, giving them a wider view of music which means they're more open to things outside metal, as many metallers I know like depeche mode, a pioneering synthpop band who have been steadily making albums for 30 years, but they'd usually ignore something like the winners of X-factor as they know it's music designed to make the charts for 2 weeks and be forgotten afterwards, and so usually has nothing to it
Michael Jackson links into this, as he often tried to make his music about something i.e. leave me alone, or heal the world etc, and that draws much more interest from people who share a wide view of music

Well, if you go to someplace like YouTube and look for any metal video, you'll see thousands of angry "metalheads" (even though they have pretty limited views on metal and music in general) complaining about every modern artist. To them, Micheal Jackson probably falls under that category.
But yeah, I agree, those of us with more variety tend to lean towards Michael Jackson.

Yeah, um, and youtube comments were an accurate representation of people's opinions since when??
being surrounded by metalheads such as at festivals, I think I have the right to claim more knowledge of this

Hey dudes pay some respect to the guy, he was amazing and that is clear to show from what he achieved in his lifetime and the response he got; and then everyone around him started turning against him becuase they wanted money so stop picking on the guy, ye his career went down the drain after a few years but that was only because of accusations( that we completely un true) ,so before u go on ranting about him having no effect on the world then just try and remember all of the money he gave to charities and all of the time he gave to charities and all of the charities he set up .he wasnt a bad guy at all , he was a person that we should see as a role model. and just because your not a fan of his music dont be the bad guy and slag him off because it just makes you a horrible human being so either say something nice or dont say anything because the world doesnt need anymore hate.
