Okay so i recently came out to my family and friends. Went A LOT better than expected. Seriously, not sure that it could have gone better.
Okay, so, it started at school that day. Some rumour was going around that i was going out with a girl i'm good friends with (who knows i am gay). In computer studies, a girl asked me about it. I replied, "Yeah, there's a couple of reasons why that's not true. First of all, I'm gay".
Stunned silence from her and the girls around her. Slowly, it got whispered/discussed around the class, and eventually it became common knowledge across the year. To be clear, i'm not really the sort one would peg as being gay so it came as a surprise to a lot of people. and, lucky me, my year is ~devoid of homophobes~. Me telling her i'm gay was kind of spur of the moment and it felt DAMN GOOD. No turning back now, i said to myself.
That afternoon, while walking home from the train station with my sister, i decided to tell her. "I'm gay"
"Serious?... cool"
We then discussed it a bit and she was completely fine with it. 1 family member down, 3 to go.
I told my mum while she was watching TV.
"I'm gay"
"What?"
"I'm gay"
"Okay"
Then a huge smile crept across her face. She was actually happy about it. She's the kind of woman that owns every season of Will and Grace and such. She then got up and hugged and told me to go tell my other sister.
"I'm gay"
"WHAT? SERIOUSLY? YOU'RE SURE? OMG"
more hugging. Then SHE ran out to me mum and they jumped up in the air about it and discussed buying me a whole new wardrobe and taking me to mardi gras and other such things.
I got my mum to tell my dad because that whole prospect still made me a bit nervous. But, the conversation went as follows
"Okay, got something to tell you so just mentally prepare yourself. Tom's gay"
"...oh well"
And that was the end of that matter. Later, he called me and said "we'll always support you" and such.
So my entire family and everyone i know was perfectly okay with it, life returned to normal, and i am Officially OUT!
Feels great!
tl;dr, i came out and everyone was happy
