Me, my doctor, parents, brother and everyone at school think and KNOW that i have Asperger's Syndrome or some sort of Autism. I have been checked twice, however, and the professors are refusing to give me a diagnosis. Apprently i appear to be "normal" and "gifted" for their liking. What can I do about this?

go to a different doctor to get a second opinion

Its not usually doctors that diagnose you with it, it took me years to be diagnosed with Aspergers and Autism, and even then it was a child psychologist that diagnosed me. Maybe it would help if you asked your doctor to refer to one. I've been going to CAHMS since i was about 8-9, and i was only diagnosed fully when i was 14.

the doctors as in the proffesional professors in a hospital. We have tried 2 different ones.

@Kaius I am 14 now... and the word CAHMS i have heard before...

So...they won't diagnose because you're too smart? Isn't that generally considered a part of autism?

Does it matter though? Do you need the piece of paper?

Yeah that's what I mean, I was going for years before I was diagnosed. Like I said, try to get a gp referral.

Try and find a private mental health practitioner. I got my Dx from a Psychiatrist/Neurologist.

CAMHS is a British organization. It stands for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

Only for certain forms (ie Asperger's.)

Does it matter though? Do you need the piece of paper?

What I was thinking. My diagnosis did very little for me.

ALSO: Move? Not ADD related.

Are Private GP's worth the money however?

Don't have to be private. You have a doctors surgery you go to don't you?

Also Alex he is british, that's why he's heard it before lol

This is gonna be something that I'm not really fit to say for you since I don't know British medicine as well as US. I will point out two things, however.

1) Do NOT go to a GP. They're not mental health specialists, and usually know just enough to say you should go see someone else.

2) As far as seeing a private mental health professional, I currently see a Neurologist/Psychiatrist who has his own practice. Were you stateside, I'd recommend him to you. (If anyone reading this thread is in the NYC area and wants a name, feel free to PM me) He has been immensely helpful. (Of course he's also covered by my insurance.)

I completely missed that.

As he's in the uk he can go to a gp who will refer him to something like CAMHS, they won't handle or diagnose it themselves

general practicioners can't diagnose mental conditions, it's the human equivalent of getting a diagnosis off webmd

BTW intellectual gifts aren't a part of an AS diagnosis, i should know, i have it, and i'm pretty dumb. i'm so tired of so-called "aspies" trying to justify their existence by saying "omg i r smrt", it's just become a huge, false cliché

as i have said god-knows-how-many-times in this place being "smart" and socially awkward does not constitute AS, it means you're "smart" and socially awkward

why are you looking for a label?

OK. Just don't expect anything other than a referral from a GP. They don't have the training.

I'm amazed the number of people I see who expect a GP to be able to diagnose them.

I went to a special hospital in the UK which deals with these things. They assessed me, came to my school etc. I was incredibly lonely on that day, i can't believe they couldnt see that. It happened about 2 hyears ago i had an assesement and this new assesement only said i had "trates of pervasive developmental disorder" but it wasn't enough for a "label". Plus it would make sense, my mum is autistic, my brother is autistic, my best friend is autistic?
