What's VT's opinion on the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_Liberties_Union)? If you don't know who they are, the link's right there.
Even though they're well known for protecting the free speech rights of the most offensive groups (such as the American Nazi Party), I think the ACLU is one of the few organizations that truly cares for the rights and freedoms of the people. They're not half assed with civil liberties ("Oh, I should be able to say this but the Westboro Baptist Church should be banned!"), and it shows when they go to court to defend people everyone hates.
I also think that they've done a lot to keep church and state separated, which helps protect us atheists from having to pray in school and participate in other bullshit activities. They're also staunch protectors of student rights, which is why I'm free to voice my opinions at school. Conservatives may hate the ACLU, but they've gone through a lot of trouble for both sides of the political spectrum.
