I was looking into weight lifting at a gym by me. And they say I have to bring a buddy with me. Why do I have to? And does weight lifting help any of you guys?

Dunno how old you are so this may not apply. My uncles really into fitness and he got me swimming instead of weights because he said you get a better all over workout and it can slow your growth while you are still growing. A lot of guys just work their biceps and stuff which is pointless. Plus I look at Tom Daley and figure - yeah I wouldn't mind being that buff lol.

I've never seen a gym require you to bring someone, but if they do it's so that the other person can spot you (spotting is supporting someone else during a lift, which normally means keeping your hands near the weight to jump in if the person starts to lose control, or to povide assistance [as light as possible!] if they can't finish the rep). Having a spotter means you can safely try larger weights than you could otherwise, and there's also somewhat of a placebo effect, meaning you can often lift more without help just because the spotter is there and you subconsciously think you're being assisted.
Weightlifting has significantly helped me. I'm much stronger now, and generally more athletic as well.

The bolded part is a myth, weightlifting does not stunt your growth. You should probably tell your uncle that.

Looks like you are right about the myth, thanks. Found an interesting article here (http://www.hughston.com/hha/a_15_2_2.html)

I'm trying to get back into weight lifting. Having more defined muscles will improve not only my health, but also my self esteem, because I feel pretty bad about how my body looks, all skinny like a dead tree.
The reason they want you to bring a partner is because weight lifting can be dangerous. Some people, especially teens, can try to showboat and lift more than they're capable of - this can cause injury. If someone isn't even showboating, they could get tired, be too inexperienced, or just make a mistake and lose control. The gym wants you to be safe, as well as decrease their risk of lawsuits. That's why they want you to have a partner - this partner is usually referred to as a spotter.
