View Full Version : Killing Spiders

Tonight my aractnifobic mother made me kill a spider. It wasnt just a regular sized spider though its size could probably be compared to a quarter, possibly a half dollar if you count its legs. Now the problem is i went to step on the spider but i only half stepped on it (probably cause i didnt want to kill it) so i had to watch it twitch there on the ground while it slowly died cause i didnt want to step on it again. For what ever reason it made me cry. so what are your views on killing spiders or rather any animal i suppose.

aww poor little spider... you should have put it out of its misery. Not that i can say much since i used to pull the legs off of spiders but still it was wrong just to let it slowly die. you probably cried because you knew that there was no real reason for it to die

I don't like killing bugs because I don't see a reason to. I mean like killing ants, for example. They made that long and hard journey to your food inside your house to be killed in one flail swoop by your foot and such.

Spiders. I hate them. I fear them more than anything. They all must die. *Lightning*
I feel remorse for killing other animals though. Arachnids...just...no.

But why do you think they should die its not there fault they stumbled into your house looking for food, warmth, maybe a nice wet cave aka your mouth while your sleeping. I'm not joking the average person swallows three spiders a year.

(We all know people eat them.)
It's just a fear that most everybody has and never get over. I just don't want them around me. There are also too many different variations of spiders around here, so I can't tell which are dangerous and which are safe to be around.

Ok yeah society has distorted spiders as being evil blood suckers so i can understand why you would fear them, almost everyone i know does. yeah some are dangerous but the way i see it, if you dont fuck with em they wont bite you.

i love how you didn't want to quickly and painlessly crush it so you mortally wounded it and watched it die slowly.
I treat arachnids the same as insects
f they leave me alone, i leave them alone
If I find one in my house, I kill it. If I come across one outside, I leave it alone.

It's not society. It's just a natural fear. Everybody has a fear of their own in some way.

allot of people believe common fears such as that of spiders, scorpions, snakes, the dark, etc... are actually primal survival instincts (fight or flight drive) we evolved over the millennia to survive.
A poisonous bite for the majority of humanities existence by even the smallest of spider meant one thing, death.

I'm the type of person who will kill a bug if it's in my house, but when outside I'll leave them alone, I'll just flick them away if need be. I hate bugs though, nobody understands how terrified I am of them. Especially...anything large, with numerous legs, or that flies.
My boyfriend on the other hand, oh mister sensitive one, doesn't like to kill bugs, he lets them go outside. Not me. :P If that thing's in my room, it's getting flushed.

I can't kill them either, but thats cos i'm too busy running fast the other way.
logically i know i have as much to fear from hippos as spiders in this country. And if it was bothering me its pretty easy to step on a spider. Maybe its because spiders are sneaky. I've never had hippos hiding behind my curtains waiting to drop on my pillow...

If all the spiders were gone there would be nothing to kill the bugs that eat our vegetable, and no vegetables means after awhile all our sources of meat will eventually die unless they resort to canabalism. so spiders are important.

Well that obviously would be a contributing factor, but I mean where I live, there are only garden snakes. The only deadly snake I've met was an Anaconda.

I kill the big ones if they're in my room, because I dislike waking up with enormous and painful bites in odd places. Otherwise I don't kill most insects, sometimes ants, and I kill ticks is unpleasant ways. And fleas. Moths I will catch and put outside. Flies I will kill if they go after me.

if they're in my room i'll kill it because i don't want it crawling around when i'm sleeping, but if it's anywhere else and isn't annoying me i'll usually leave it be.

In most cases, I will usually catch the spiders or other bugs which are in my house, and put them outside, but sometimes I do kill them. For example, if i'm about to go to bed, and theres a spider in my room, I would probably kill it! It would be too much hassle to try and catch it, and I would hate the idea of a spider crawling all over me while I sleep, and there are those people that think spiders crawl down your mouth when you sleep. Ergh!

Instead of killing them I jsut put them outside. that way it means it can live, and anyone who's scared know it wont get back in.

As an animalist, I have to go with the phrase "Survival of the fittest". Scorpion and Spider poison isn't comparable to a water insect venom. But obviously, spider is a common creature that crawls around your house. So, I don't see the problem here.
Yes, I am an insectophobe. I get the 'nervous attack' if they are flying, huge entomoids.

If I see them in the bathroom, I typically kill and flush them. If I find them in the living room or anywhere else, I will actually go the extra mile of gently moving them outdoors.

As far as I know, the only purpose of a spider is to eat bugs. I don't think that killing a Daddy Long Leg in your house will ruin the food chain.

No but it could kill the mosquito that would otherwise harass and, depending on your area, possibly kill you.

Insects are animals.
And we are humans. Most of us only categorize an animal's intelligence by the amount of human-like things they are able to do or how well they can adapt to captivity.
Morality takes a backseat when it comes to things like this.
