Where to start?

There is this guy, he's in my class in art school, I have a crush on him. It's based on looks more than personality, because we havo no time to talk during classes. 2 days ago my friend told him about my feelings (which is really stupid of her, because now he thinks I'm shy which is not true) and since then he has been giving me the weirdest looks ever.
So my biggest problem is how do I start a conversation between us without it being awkward? :what:

just go up to him maybe with another friend if that helps and just say hello how are you, and see where it goes from there. maybe if u guys develope a friendship things might go further.
but don't tell him your feelings for him before ur even friends cuz it will screw things up....

I've been in awkward positions like these, not because I had a crush on a guy but something pretty embarassing.
What I would do: I would get my friend to start talking to him, then just go and join the conversation, don't be awkward and just be as relaxed as possible.
