View Full Version : Auto-lock for threads.

I think it would be a good idea if there were a feature where threads were automatically closed after a certain period of time. I see a lot of threads being closed because people bump them, so it seems like this would come in handy.

Despite it being a very good idea and would save mods a lot of time I think the site would look very unwelcoming with all the locked threads.

Well, OP's are allowed to bump their own threads. And sometimes threads can go on and on and on. Some need locking yes, but some dont. It would really vary by case, and this is why VT has mods, to determine if a thread should be locked or not. :)

Definitely not, that would cause us much more work than it would save.
Anyways, we're on staff for a reason. Having to lock some threads isn't that big an imposition.

I think it wouldn't be worth it. Whether there are newer replies or not it would lock. Like David said, we're on staff to take care of old bumped threads. Or the members that can report them to be locked. I see no point in it.

I think, instead, we should take off the "similar threads" box at the bottom of each page, since usually all the threads in it are years old. I bet that's where all the bumps for old threads come from, since I doubt people would go searching through hundreds of pages of archives.

This isn't entirely true for all areas of the forum. What Similar Threads does if you don't understand already, is when a title for a thread is made, and it correlates with another thread with a likewise title it is put down there just in case there maybe double threads. Though it sometimes does have threads linked back quite a ways, it doesn't stop the moderators from locking the threads that are bumped. I think it's a convenience.

That is true, but I think it serves as a gateway to older threads for newer members to bump. How else would they find these threads from 2007 and 2008?

That's why i said that.
Even though it has that flaw, it makes up for it, by pointing out duplicate threads.

Could it be tweaked to only show threads that haven't passed the two-week mark? Because that's a pretty major flaw.

No, to be honest. It's not that big of a flaw. It make all the threads with a similar title be in the box. It's so multiple threads aren't created and so it keeps everything in order. Also when you look at the similar threads box it had a date of the last post and year. So it is painfully obvious that we're not in that year if it's dated back far.

i like the idea of the auto lock for threads. However i think old threads should be bumped, i had no idea ops could bump their own old threads, because i would've commented on a few of mine, because sometimes i don't remember posting.. then i'll go back and see in a few months... hey.. i posted that already, and i never thanked that person for their help, so i feel bad. I think however if there was a no bump rule after a certain amount of time, that there should be an auto lock and it would come in handy for mods. However i think there sholdn't be a no bump rule xp because old psots cna help people, and people putting their input in it, might really help that person. :)

Personally I like the idea but it's been discussed before and the answer has been no.

Well, I think in some ways it's a very good idea. I mean, Mods spend a lot of time locking threads, and it would stop spammers going round bumping threads with one word answers to get their post count up. But:
I think the site would look very unwelcoming with all the locked threads.
^^ this. In some forums, if you go past the first page a lot of the threads are more than a month old. That wouldn't look very welcoming to new members, and VT is supposed to be a welcoming community. It would defeat the object of the site. Plus locking threads isn't exactly that time consuming, and I'm sure the rest of the staff would rather lock threads once they're bumped or if the OP requests rather than unlocking them so the OP can bump it if they want. It seems pointless to lock it straight away.
It's not like every old thread gets bumped, so there's no point locking every old thread.

People literally cannot make a descision that is not in a way biased, computers do not have this quality. In other words computers really cant realize if a thread should be closed or not, i say we stick with the humans for once.
