I would like to distinguish between family and relatives. it makes me sick to hear that phrase family has got to stick together blood is thicker then water. family i believe are the people who care about you. if your mother father and siblings care for you then fair enough consider them family but if not then don't call them family. I know who my family are and it's not my biological relations. i don't believe anyone should care about people who don't care about them and you shouldn't feel guilty for not caring about your biological family as i see so many people do. we only get one life we shouldn't waste it on people who don't care. ive known very few people in my life i can call family and i sure as hell wouldn't consider my biological family as my REAL family. i learned that the hard way. people who accept you for who you are, people who care about you and not what they want you to be or what they want from you those people deserve what you give your family out of loyalty. people say they gave birth to me, feed me, cloth me and provide me with the things i need they deserve respect. i say can respect and the ability to care be bought? no. they must earn it. your guardians pay for you because they must or will be seen as neglectful tainting their image they do what society dictates they must. i say you can choose your family and feel no guilt. take a look around who do you rely on to get through the hard times, who has helped you better yourself and recover from the stages in life when you became lost and depressed? who are the people who look out for you because they cared enough to do so? who are the people You can trust and turn to? when you find those people you call them family

this reminds me of something someone said to me at work last week, regarding immediate family members she doesn't get along with. this was made in reference to one specific family member, but demonstrates your point 'you can choose your friends, but not your relatives. i know who cares about me and sure as hell it's not her' her, being a sister.

Family takes more than blood. Just because you're related to someone doesn't make them family. I agree with you on that completely. I've always been pretty close to my family, but I've always thought someone can be considered family even if they're not a blood relative. Blood isn't what creates the bond between family members, it's the love and care you have for one another.

Couldn't agree more. I'm closer to many of my friends than I am with my own family. I would do anything for them.
