NOTICE: OUTSTANDING LEVELS OF NERD RAGE TO BE FOUND IN THIS THREAD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

I'm going to try to keep this as concise as possible because I have a profound headache right now. I don't think any of my friends on VT here are all that into gaming, so it might not be a terribly well known fact, but I myself am quite the PC gamer. Over the past year, I discovered, by chance, what would eventually become my absolute favorite RPG- nay, not RPG, my absolute favorite game ever, Dragon Age: Origins. This game has consumed many days of my life. You know why?
Because Dragon Age: Origins is a goddamned RPG. When I play the game, I get to be a human, or a dwarf, or an elf, and I get to uncover ancient evil and save the world. My character doesn't have a voice actor. Believe it or not, whenever it's their turn to say something, I get a nice list of a half dozen or so things I can have them say. The game won't make it blatantly obvious what the morality of any of these choices are. I actually have to, you know, read things and think about it. Dragon Age is a fucking roleplaying game, right out of the old school, and can stand alone on just that. It doesn't need to be a shooter and an RPG. It doesn't need to be an action game and an RPG. It doesn't need to be The Sims and an RPG.
It's a fucking RPG that takes its audience seriously and shows no mercy to those of limited attention span.
I used to love you, Bioware. I really did. But now you have to go out and pull shit like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gil5vtbEqx4). I wanted a sequel to what was, in my opinion, the greatest game I've ever played. I wanted a new roleplaying game that would build off of everything I loved about the first game. But what do you do instead?
You take a nice, steamy hot dumb in my begging hands and tell me to stuff my face with it. You give me Mass Effect with elves. This is everything wrong with roleplaying games today. No, we can't make the players grease up the old gears in their head and make them read things. No, we can't make morality and personal choices open-ended and ambiguous. No, we can't make an RPG that doesn't have to draw from any other genre. I fucking hate you Bioware. We are over, and I absolutely refuse to acknowledge the existence of any Dragon Age sequel from this point on.
Now if you'll excuse me, there's a nice, sharp blade I need to go fall on.

I can sympathise with you, Tim. I know there is a genuine lack of proper RPGs, especially in the fantasy genre. Dragon age was good, but they well and truly fucked the sequel. I for one, will not be buying it, i dont like that type of game
If you are looking for something like the original Dragon Age, have you tried Oblivion? One of the better western RPGs out there, no guns, and your character does not have voice. I would also reccomend fallout, but i dont think you would like it, it has too much action to be considered a 100% RPG.

Very funny post, very sad news. Cancelling me pre order, thanks for the warning.
Oblivion rocked. Currently playing risen which is more limited but still fun. Looking forward to gothic 3 too.

No offense, Jason, but I was hacking and slashing my way through Oblivion when you were ten years old. I should also note, as I didn't in my first post, that I have nothing against Mass Effect- I actually quite enjoy it, even though I don't consider it an RPG. That's what Bioware is turning Dragon Age into, which annoys the hell out of me, they've a poor reputation for recycling plots enough as it is.
BUT HEY, ON THE BRIGHT SIDE. Everyone should look into The Witcher 2. It's shaping up to be more of what I was expecting in a Dragon Age sequel. Maybe not all hope is lost.

Uhhh ... Why would it show F3 as a turn based game, it is not ?
Anyway, he is right. I won't buy Fallout New Vegas, my only hope lies in Elder Scrolls 5.
Never played Dragon Age but yeah, when there is a LOT of change, people don't like it.
For example, half of the Fallout community thinks Fallout 2 is way better than Fallout 3 .
And IMO, Oblivion is the godfather of RPG games, well, at least The Elder Scrolls : Arena is the godfather of RPGs.
Ahhhh, I miss my Dungeon Siege 1 ..... :(

I'm not saying Fallout or Mass Effect or Fable or any of these games aren't bad. I'm just saddened that they've created this paradigm wherein people think an RPG isn't marketable without blending genres.

Obviously i meant gothic 4 above (-nerd rep)
I really hate how they compromise and make games fluffy and brainless that could have rocked. My uncle recokons its happened to PC games since Xbox. Dunno. But I never understood how people can play games on god mode or similar cheats. I LOVE the challenge of a hard mob and having to come up with tactics to beat them, and problem solving to earn rewards. And i'm much rather get those rewards that add interest rather than making me uber powerful like better combat moves (which I still have to have the skill to use) or utility spells.
I was put off witcher because the combat looked too basic although the video for it really excited me (and scared me lol). Might look at 2 ...
I was looking forward to Alan Wake (nearly said Adam West lol - too much family guy) but then they pulled the PC release. my mum had that on preorder for me since I was like 12 <sob>.

Yeah. Another thing I enjoyed about Dragon Age is that the game can and will kick your ass if you don't know what you're doing.

Story takes priority over combat, I feel.

Well we shouldn't get surprised if we hear these talk in RPG games...
"Relay from Goliath - 1 you have an enemy Dragon loaded for bear approaching your are over!"
"Alpha 2-4 this is Charlie 6 Elven sniper teams incoming, send out the Dwarf recons."
Story is the important thing, I don't give a hell if the graphs are from TES Arena or from TES Oblivion, story, characters and the feeling that you want to continue that matters...
And yeah ! We need original games !
And if they think that blending is better, then why they didn't copy anything from the very first computer game, Pacman ?
Let's just hope we dont see medieval rifles in Elder Scrolls....

i could never even give dragon age a chance on my console it just lagged constantly to the point that i just said "fuck it" and sold it. There was nothing wrong with the console either, no memory problems etc.

I first played Dragon Age on the 360 as well and never experienced any lag problems that lasted more than a second or two.

maybe the very slim chance that it was a faulty disc or something, but seriously it was bad, like trying to play Fallout or call of duty etc on a PC with a really bad graphics card

Regardless, I don't think you should let that poor experience sour your opinion of an otherwise fantastic game. Try it on the PC- that version is far superior to the console one.

tim, do you even own a 360?
And all story orientated games end up being better on PC, but multiplayer is consoles, imo

I don't visit other peoples' homes or get out all that much, so the only way I could play the game on a 360 would be to own one, so yes. Yes, I do own a 360. PC aside, it's my favorite gaming platform this generation.

I understand your rage at Bioware. I was saddened that Mass Effect 2 had lost all of its RPG elements. Well, not all, but you know what I mean.
