View Full Version : When is political correctness justified and when is it not?

Do we have to be politically correct all the time or only during certain times?

Should people be able to voice opinions without having to worry about being fired from jobs or vilified for offending someone?

Is political correctness used to the point of tolerating harmful ideas and practices?

Is it ever abused?

Is it used too little?

I would say political correctness is rarely, if ever, justified. People can no longer say what they think without being accused on being un-PC

Political correctness is almost equivalent to censorship. You can't say what you want in public without people getting butthurt. Land of the free my ass.

This. Pretty much sums up my opinion.

If you're ever giving a speech, in the workplace, or in any other more professional situations you should always be PC it's just the more professional thing to do and it can keep from offending a lot of people. Also using PC terms when talking to a complete stranger would probably be best, but besides that no reason to do it.

I don't ever try to be PC, unless I'm talking to *certain* adults. By certain, I'm talking about adults I respect.

I can't stand people who will freak out everytime you say something that isn't politically correct, like uptight negroes or butthurt homosexuals.

inb4 racist/homophobe.

I don't think it's ever justified, it's just pandering to the likes of Harriet Harperson and her cronies.

I hate political correctness with a passion.

Its meant to create equality and make the world a safer place, but it does the total opposite.
I think political correctness creates frictions between races, genders, religions etc. It also seems to be making the 'white male' category the worst place to be. No gender or race should be unsuperior to others, and it seems to be happening to the white male category, mostly because of political correctness.

I also remember a few years back, some schools in the UK banned the nursery rhyme 'Baa Baa Black Sheep'. Many black communites actually thought this was ridiculous themselves, and it doesn't even refer to a black person. Unneccessary banning like this gives ignorant people the chance to hate other races, as in their eyes for the Baa Baa Black Sheep example, its black people's fault the song was banned. This is what I mean by political correctness causing racial tension.

Also, the extremists who like to enforce political correctness are not doing themselves any favours. For example, many extreme feminists who enforce political correctness has made people assume that all feminists are extremist feminsts, which certainly isnt the case.

Political Correctness is ruining schools. If you dont learn from history you are doomed to repeat it.If history is altered to such an extent that it doesnt seem as bad or in worse cases, never actually happened, people are gone think its ok to do it.

For anyone who doesn't know who Harriet Harperson is then this is her lastest handiwork

Political Correctness is ruining schools.

My friends parents insisted the school took his pic of the website where he was in his all-in-one (rowing). it wasn't like he had a boner or anything lol. Anyway they were paranoid about pedos so now the school has taken ALL of those sorts of photos off which is just stupid imho, so now all you get is really badly posed cheesy photos.

Its also made a fuss and (also because i screwed up to be fair) my parents are now totally paranoid about me having photos online.

How do you feel about celebrities getting fired and losing endorsements from saying things that are politically incorrect.

Rick Sanchez was rightfully fired for spewing out hate towards Jews. When people do stuff like that, they should be fired because they make who they are working for look bad.

Celebrities should have a right to say what they want, to an extent. Rick Sanchez, for example, should have been fired because he's introducing political bias into a job that requires neutrality. Plus, he's a dick. He wasn't fired for being politically incorrect, he was fired for ruining his own reputation and showing that he can't handle not being in the spotlight.

The companies are trying to maintain an image, and if they feel like that person can no longer support it they have the right to fire them.

you should be able to say whatever you want to say.
is it abused? hell yeah.
i prefer to think that nothing is wrong, mainly because i dont agree with what society finds wrong and if i were to make my own set of things that i thought were wrong i would be a hypocrit.
