The finale of Australia's Next Top Model was thrown into chaos last night when host Sarah Murdoch announced the wrong winner of the show.

Murdoch initially said 19-year-old Kelsey Martinovich from Sydney had won the 2010 series.

Kelsey had delivered her acceptance speech and thanked her fellow models and fans before Murdoch was forced to make an embarrassing apology.

"I don't know what to say right now … I'm feeling a bit sick about this," Murdoch said while shaking her head.

"I'm so sorry, oh my God, I don't know what to say. This is a complete accident, I'm so sorry.

"It was fed to me wrong.

"This is what happens when you have live TV folks, this is insane, insane, insane."

Holding her hand to her head, Murdoch then revealed 18-year-old Gold Coast contestant Amanda Ware was the real winner.

"It's ridiculous, how could this happen," Murdoch said as she endeavoured to console Kelsey.

"It's okay. It's an honest mistake. It's fine. It's alright" Kelsey said.

A stunned Amanda, who was the favourite to win the competition, embraced Kelsey after the announcement.

"I'm so sorry," Amanda said to Kelsey.

After she was asked to say a few words about being announced the winner Amanda appeared confused and said: "really, thanks guys".

Murdoch attempted to explain the error, blaming it on a technical problem.

"I told you the lead kept changing, we kept going, it was literally down to a handful of votes," she said.

While Amanda was congratulated by the judges and fellow competitors Murdoch walked off the stage.

In a statement, a Foxtel spokesman said Murdoch handled the difficult situation with "utmost professionalism and grace".

"At the time of the result announcement there was a miscommunication between the broadcast truck and the stage," the spokesman was quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph.

Amanda and Kelsey were "neck and neck" in the voting all night, according to Foxtel.

Foxtel has confirmed the company will give Kelsey a $20,000 cash prize and a trip to New York as compensation.

The finale event for the sixth series of the show was held at Luna Park in Sydney last night.

The decision was made by viewers voting via telephone and digital television.

Not a bad consolation prize though.
