A New Zealand school has been criticised by animal rights groups for staging an 'immoral’ possum-throwing contest for students.

The contest, in which students swung possum carcasses over their heads and hurled them across the playground, was unacceptable, the New Zealand Royal Society for the Protection of Animals said.

RSPCA manager Danny Auger said he had received three complaints about the competition at Colyton School, in the North Island, and would raise concerns with its teachers.

“While it’s technically not illegal, it’s morally wrong to throw a dead animal around.” Auger told the Manawatu Standard newspaper.

“It’s about time that people wake up and smell 2010 and realise that these sorts of things shouldn’t be happening. It’s an archaic practice and it should be stopped.”

He said if students were taught that throwing around possums was acceptable, they could do the same to pets such as cats.

Possums are protected in their native Australia but regarded as a pest in New Zealand, where the population exploded after they were introduced in the 19th century in an attempt to start a fur trade.

The Department of Conservation said they threaten native bird species and delicate ecosystems.

Ew, that's just gross. Disrespectful towards the animal and extremely unsanitary. I would really be mad if my kid did that at school.

A dead body is a dead body it doesn't really matter, it is not aware of what you're doing and never will be again. unsanitary well i might give you that but if they're throwing them into the woods what do you think used to happen in nature before?

I dont regard it as immoral, the animals are dead, its not going to make much difference to them really. Of course if they are killed just so they can be thrown around by school kids thats a different thing. It does seem somewhat unpleasant and unsavory though, I wouldnt want that to be at my kids sports day.

why would someone even want to throw a dead carcass around?

Because it's dead and it's fun.

"Oh hey, let's go pick up some roadkill and let the children toss their rotting carcasses across the playground."

It's disgusting. I wouldn't be mad because it's 'immoral' as much as it is very unsanitary, possums have rabies.

On a side note, anybody remember this?

This. If the animals were already dean, and were sanitized, I don't really have a problem with it.
