View Full Version : The N Word (Yes, I didn't write it out. Sue Me.)

In my humble opinion, I feel that nobody regardless of race should use the N word in any context. It has an ugly history, and was generally used to demean black people.
Now you know how I feel, how do you feel? Do you agree with me? Do you think black people should use the N word? Should white people be able to use the N word in non-derogatory contexts? What about other non-black people?

Never going to happen. We don't live in a perfect world.
Personally I don't think we should make routinely use of any racial slur, but people will still find ways of doing it.

People should be free to use the N-word. It's just a word, regardless of its historical context it only carries offense if you interpret it to. When someone says any dirty word, it's not their fault that they're offending someone, it's the fault of the person getting offended.

It is if they intend to offend the person.
I think it's just a word, I don't like it very much but then again I'm not using it daily either. I'm still not going to get uptight when someone else says it though.

Even though, it's just a word. It can be shrugged off. If it's accompanied with an action or physical gesture, then it carries more of a message.

Word's can't always be shrugged off, the things people say can be a hell of a lot worse than any physical stuff. I know words only have as much power as you give them but it's not easy taking that power away from them.

I know it's true that some people find it harder to ignore words than others, but in the end I believe anyone can simply ignore someone talking to them.
It may be the way a person says something that impacts someone. If you can feel the emotion in their voice, then I can understand why someone would react to that.

if someone uses the word nigger because they are talking about how they should or shouldnt use the word nigger it isnt wrong the only time using the word nigger should be seen as offensive is if it is used offensively. i know a black guy and we call him nigger but we say it to him and we joke about it so to me and him and all our friends its a joke but if someone outside our group called him a nigger and used it offensively we would all kick his ass

You can't flip-flop and say "oh, people can say nigger around these people, but not these people or I'll be offended!" You either use it or you don't. There's no line-drawing here.

I totally agree- I don't see why some people say there's a difference between "nigga" and the N-word. It'd be like if I went around calling other gay guys "fags"- I mean, just cause I'm gay doesn't make the word any less offensive or hurtful! I mean, I can somewhat understand the idea of "taking back the word" and using it as your own, sort of how the gay community has used the previously offensive word "queer" and made it positive-sounding. But that word dates back to one of the darkest chapters of human history- the African slave trade.
If anyone's watched Roots, you'll hear that word all the time, even when slaves refer to each other. It represents oppression, hatred, ignorance, and in my opinion is one of the ugliest words out there. So yes, we shouldn't hold a double standard- we need to eliminate it from our vocabulary entirely!

I wasn't necessarily saying that it needs to be eliminated from our vocabulary forever. It just annoys me when people say things like "black people can use nigger when talking to each other, but white people aren't allowed to say it." It's stupid to say someone can use a word freely, yet someone else can not simply because of the color of their skin. That's racist.
If you're going to use "nigger" at all, don't draw lines on how you use it. If you're never going to use it, never use it. Simple enough.
In my opinion, words do not carry emotion. It's the way they're said and the physical gestures that accompany them that do.

No one cares. Nigger is a word, nothing more and nothing less. The only time a word has power is when you give it power. If you manage not to do that, you'll be fine in life. It doesn't make me a racist if I just say the word. My nigger friends know I use it, they have no problem with it, mostly because they share my views on it just being a word and nothing more. See what I did there? The word is nothing more than letters grouped together, get over it and continue living.

Tbh there is way too much excitement in society about may i stress this words. It is a word, you and only you give it meaning. I've been called nigger jokingly and you know what i laugh because it means nothing to me. I know around here the word means nothing and noone ever takes offense to it because they all understand it is a word. Why take offense people?

It is a word you are missing my point. A simple word. You give it meaning not anyone else, when you take offence you give it meaning. Why allow it to have meaning when it is your own decision.

Because it is more than a word it is an expression of an attitude. I guess the worst part is that a person is cruel enough to express such an opinion with such a word.

You're not getting it here. Nigger is a word. Nigger has nothing to do with attitude. Nigger only takes an attitude when you give it attitude. Nigger means nothing until you add meaning to it. So until then, I will continue to say nigger all I want because I am not an insecure honky.

You wish to speculate on my personal life, that is not the topic of this thread but if you really feel you have to pursue this for some reason i will answer your question. I would not care less if a partner of mine defended me or not because it would be they who were offended not me. If for some reason you really feel you must take this further pm me and stop straying off topic into my personal life. I may or may not answer your questions probably won't

What it sounds like you guys are saying is that the word is magically given it's meaning out of nowhere. A lot of people grow up learning that word was offensive by their parents and grandparents, and that's because back then it was widely use in that way. If that's all you hear growing up ti's going to take a lot to get over the meaning of that word. It's just one of those things that some people will never get over.

We all mature and become our own people what you suggest is holding onto your family and community prejudices and beliefs. that is something you should avoid. people should be their own person and make their own decision. once you become old enough to make your own decisions you shouldn't let the general opinion effect you

wow people, just wow. Nigger/Negro has its origins from the latin word Negro, meaning black. It is in no way offensive, at least not anymore, and in portuguese and spanish, negro is the WORD for black. So, if you cant accept that, then really harden the fuck up.
It would help SO much if blacks, and ultra sensitive whites stopped being scared of saying black, or nigger etc and foccussed on the real issues, e.g Racial profileing, Black prison Rates, Black poverty and black health care etc etc.

I use to say "nigger" a lot. Did I say it in a racial way? Nope; I said it for the lulz. I don't say it anymore since I have no reason to, but on the off occasion I say "nigga" to just to be stupid. Sometimes I say it on here. "Nigger" is just a word, and it still has the same definition because people allow it to.

Well, most of the south (Texas, California, among others) of Present-day America were colonized by the Spanish. Who would blame them :P
lol, I say Negro a bit, since we're also once within the Sphere of Influence of Spain. I don't mean it seriously, our campus hosts a significant number of blacks, I'd be damned if I say that around them, with racist overtones. :P

African Americans call White people things, so why is it so taboo for us to use the word? If we cant say it, either should they. Equality right? Same with every other ethnicity. As a side note slavery happened so long ago, sorry. Now get over it just a little will ya? There is STILL slavery other places. It is not right, But personally i feel bad for the slaves today, i'm sorry for the past. But i will not dwell in it.

Why be sorry for an action you had no control over? I'm not going to say sorry if one of my ancestors happened to own your great great great great uncle Kunto Kinte, no one should. The past is the past, we can not alter it and should not kneel down to the whim of others to say we're sorry for it.

I love how threads like these always turn into "You black people always take thing so serious and you need to yada yada yada yada" then it becomes a huge "say what you want to a black guy that you never would to their face".
Most of the complaints here only count for a small percentage and most of them aren't as high strung as this thread makes them out to be. Seriously if it's not that much of a big deal why make it seem a majority of black people are making it that way?
