Pop singer, Lady Gaga, has spoken out about gay rights in the US military at a rally in Portland, Maine

She wants the state's Republican senators to vote to repeal the military's 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy on gay people.

With a big American flag in the background, big dark glasses and a black suit, Lady Gaga held the rally near the University of Southern Maine campus, and delivered an impassioned appeal to end the ban on openly gay and lesbian military service members.

Gaga said: "If you are not committed to perform with excellence as a United States soldier because you don't believe in full equality, go home!

If you are not honorable enough to fight without prejudice, go home!

If you are not capable of keeping your oath to the armed forces to defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and I will bear true faith and allegiance to do the same- unless there is a gay soldier in my unit - then go home!"

The measure needs 60 votes, including at least one Republican, to move forward. Republican John McCain is thought to be looking to block the repeal.

Gaga called out Maine Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to join Democrats in an effort to override McCain and end the discriminatory law.

Gaga is best known for her eccentric outfits and hits such as Bad Romance, Paparazzi, Alejandro and Poker Face.

i'm glad someone is doing something about gay right in the military. i think homosexuals should be able to say they are a homosexual, be proud of who they are,and do what they want to do, like fight for America. Equality... pshh America doesn't have equality.. *rolls eyes* there's descrimination.. always descrimination... to say everyone is equal is B.S.

Sadly, won't happen anytime soon. 'Tis a shame though, but I commend Gaga for making the speech

I have to say that's a pretty brave thing to say, but I doubt it will happen. Those are some pretty strong words, it's about time!

I thought Lady Gaga's stance on gay rights was already fairly well established? Maybe I'm reading in to this too deeply, but the thread title seems to suggest this should be surprising to some degree.

Too bad the measure didn't get passed. It didn't surprise me that Gaga was going to take a stance in this.

I'm so tempted to make a comment about her/his penis.. Oh well. I just did.

In all seriousness, I don't think anything that any pop star or other celebrity says will change any of the equality rights or opinions in America. At least in the Uk we're openly homophobic, racist, sexist, ageist etc..

Still, she's speaking out Ben. She's trying to address issues and gain support.

My question on this rather stupid ban is this: Since when does being gay impede your ability and desire to defend your country?
The answer is it doesn't. I hate how America is a country of 6 year-olds who giggle and point when they see "pee-pee parts." We can't seem to handle sexuality to any degree and and don't seem to want to allow individualism in different degrees anymore.

It's about unit cohesion. Gays are not prohibited from serving in the military. They're prohibited from threatening the unit by providing an impediment to group bonding. In a firefight, you should see the men you're serving with. Many straight men have at least a subconscious discomfort around homosexual men. That subconscious, uncontrollable issue costs lives.
