I might be getting a PS3, and I heard from a friend, that there's an upgrade you can buy from Sony to play PS2 games on the PS3, and i was wondering if it was true?
I need a new PS2, and I already know around Spring I'm getting PS3, so if I can play PS2 games on the PS3, then I won't need to spend the money on the PS2.

Okay.
So if i got a Gamestop Refurbished PS3 80gb, I can play the certain games?

Yes, so long as you have the latest firmware update available from Sony.

I'm pretty sure the current in-production models of the PS3 DON'T have backwards compatibility, which is a major reason not to buy one if you have tons of leftover PS2 games.

At the time it was costing around £50 extra to add in all the technology into the system for the backwards compatibility to work and at the time the ps3 hadn't caught on to the larger scale general public and making the price tag more reasonable was a must.

That makes sense, but it's a huge sacrifice. It damages the PS3's image with people who own a lot of PS2 games and gives Xbox fanboys more to complain about.

i cant play ps2 games anyway once a console is dead i see no reason to revisit, with the ony exception of golden oldies, snes, N64 for example, so it didn't bother me in the slightest

There are a lot of PS2 games that I would love to play on a PS3, especially the old Guitar Heroes. My PS2 has been broken for a long time, so I don't get to play Guitar Hero I or II anymore.

What!? The PS2 has a great collection of games. Many re-playable, such as the Rachet and Clanks and other AAA games.

That's what Frets on Fire (http://fretsonfire.net/) is for. ;)

I despise Ratchet and Clank, I don't know how many times i've tried to get into this game series but it just bores the bollocks off me :P any game from the ps2 that i would be interested in playing seems to be remastered for the ps3 anywas, God of war for example.... although i still wouldn't.

Vanilla FoF?
Because I'll agree that vanilla FoF does suck.

Tried FoFiX?

Also saw that, wasn't interested. They just don't seem to live up to the real games (rock band/guitar hero), but that's to be expected of a free PC program.
