Ok so I've been hearing about rooting the droid for a while now and I've been on google to see what it actually does, I couldt find anything. I've seen sites saying it gives you free apps, free internet tethering, etc etc.

Does anyone know what rooting the droid actually does?

Rooting your phone just gives you root access to your phone. This just means that you have permissions to adjust certain system level files that non-rooted users would not have access to.

In order to get the free apps and tethering, you need flash a ROM made by a third-party developer onto your phone. This can only be done with a rooted phone.

Rooting in droid is jailbreaking in iPhone. It allows you to freely modify system files.

vodafone in the uk wont support the phone until you do a factory reset i believe. so if you have probs they'll make you do that first. also you are vulnerable to viruses and malware more because now the apps run with higher security privilige and can break more of your phone or do sneaky things.

Depends on the person fixing it, probably. I know I have a Samsung Moment through Sprint, and the Tech who worked on my phone a while back troubleshooting a problem said he had to flash it back to the factory ROM before he could work on it because of company policy.
