Does anyones school offer american sign language as a class. None do here or where I used to live. Doesnt it seem odd that we offer several other languages but not sign language??
Am I totally off in this thought?

Unless you are in a MASSIVE school, most high schools won't have it. However most colleges and universities have it.

I was told that one of the reasons for requiring that students study a foreign language, other than to be able to use it at some very simple level, is to teach linguistics and develop skills related to language in general. Would sign language provide those benefits? Is it really a language in the "mental functioning" sense?

I would love to learn sign language
The only "extra" language at my school is Chinese.

Well I think that sign language is a language which, instead of acoustically conveyed sound patterns, uses visually transmitted sign patterns like manual communication, body language to convey meaning, Sign languages have often evolved around schools for deaf students.

It's not a formal class, but they have a sign language club.

No school around where i live actually teaches sign language or have a sign language class. But that is a good idea because people should be able to learn sign language due to some jobs do require it like special needs teachers or regular teachers might need it and even nurses that take care of sick people alot.

There is a class at my school
But I'm already taking Spanish and Chinese, sooo I don't have the time nor the brain capacity to learn all three xD
Maybe someday.
But yeah, it's definately good to offer it

At my school they only offer Spanish and French- but you can sign up for "post-secondary" classes and get high school and college credit at the same time (that's what I do, by the way). Most universities and a few community colleges offer sign language- the college where I'm going to offers ASL, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
