Now that my old 2007 first-gen iPod touch is dying, I need a new mp3 player. My birthday's at the end of the month, so I have some time to make a decision.
I'm considering getting a 32GB Zune HD (http://www.zune.net/en-us/products/zunehd/zunehd32/features.htm). I haven't been fond of Apple's treatment of their first-gen customers, nor have I really been satisfied with the performance of the iPod. This seems like the best alternative.
However, I'm also split between just getting a new iPod touch.
What does VT think I should get?

As a proud owner of a zHD32, I can defiantly say that you will not be disappointed with it.
While it does fall behind in Apps, in terms of numbers, it excels in almost every other area. Though, I'd like to mention that all apps are free, and developed internally by Microsoft.
Plus, it's /way/ more aesthetically pleasing, the attention to detail that Microsoft gives the UI is outstanding. Not to mention, that the OLED screen is orgasmic. In a dark room, you seriously can't tell where the edges of the screen are, which is pretty cool in my book, that a screen can get /that/ black.
I feel like I'm going on a ramble here.... :p
I say go with the zHD, but the final decision is up to you.
Edit: Also, wireless syncing is something that's worth mentioning. Podcasts(As well as anything else you happen to download) sync overnight while it's plugged in, halfway across my house from my computer.

I know, but the iPod touch 4's new HD camera and retina screen look appetizing. The lack of apps for the zune are a major blow in my book, but the inclusion of HD radio is pretty cool. Still, a camera with video-chat for only $50 more is a good deal.
The aesthetics and UI design of the zune are very nice, better than the iPod from the looks of it. However, that camera is going to be a major factor in which one I choose.

I'd like to point out that the Zune is first and foremost, a portable media player. So of course it isn't going to have a bunch of bells and whistles (Such as 1,000s of apps, or a HD camera). Which, for someone like me, who uses his media player for exactly that, playing media, it's a perfect match for me.
If I want to play a game, I hop on my computer/laptop, I don't need 1,000s of apps, or a camera (Which my phone has).
As I said, the final decision is up to you.
If having a bunch of apps and a camera is important to you, then by all means, get an iPod.

I'm questioning whether I should even get another mp3 player. I listen to music mainly on the computer, but my iPod is my child on vacations and other trips.
I'll probably end up getting an iPod for the camera, which I can see being extremely convenient.

Why would you be taking pictures on your iTouch? Lol, if it's for Facebook I understand, but otherwise, it's pretty random.

Get a 120gb ipod classic, lol Zune's can't handle shit, I play some fresh dubstep on my ipod no problem. I put it on a zune and it breaks the zune. So fail on tha shizznet stay on the pod.

I would have my own camera. It would just be pretty convenient being able to use that instead of my crappy phone camera.

haha, I don't need that much space. 32GB is enough for me.

I would much prefer a Zune HD or a Samsung P3 over an Apple music product but don't be quick to scratch Walkman off the list. If your not buying an ipod shuffle that means your not looking for stupid dopey apps, ergo your in it for the music. Sony has with handheld music mastered this above all other devices with any of it modern digital models most notably the X series.

It's true that I don't use apps much, which would be a reason to not buy another iPod touch. I'm starting to lean towards the zune now, because it has everything I need without any unnecessary extras. I took a look at the walkman X, it's more expensive and frankly doesn't look as nice.

True it's more expensive, but i'm an audiophile and thought the extra £10 between the Touch and it was acceptable. But really so far Ipod, Zune or Samsung haven't been on par with the Walkman brand in music, the best being what i'm after. Plus it has an OLED screen so i would say it's nicer than the Touch.

I've changed my mind and am definitely getting a Zune HD. The iPod touch is just too expensive for something I probably won't use often. It'll end up sitting on my desk, and I know I won't take advantage of all its features.
Plus I want to get Civilization V too, and that combined with the iPod touch is too much in my opinion.

Aint that just like another £35 video game?

Zune HD: $250
Civ V: $50
I don't want to go over $300. And CivV isn't just another video game, apparently it's the new holy grail of simulation and strategy games. Must have.

Holy fuck those things have gotten expensive since the discontinuation, mine was £200 for the 32gb, they've raised by about £100 in value.
